Iv'e always played you have to send the frozen ball or the cue ball to a different rail.

9 ball. so only the frozen object ball has to cushion a different rail after contact if the cue ball doesn't ?

yes, must the cue-ball contact a different rail after contact, other than rail the ball is frozen to?
