yesterday (9/10) was a sad day for billiards!

I think this is the best post I have read on this subject. If the call goes Jason's way, he wins because Earl made a mistake in saying wat ball he was looking at, vs actually beating him at pool That being said, Earl shouldn't be lying about it either. A pretty sad day indeed on all parts.

Very good B player or solid A?

Beating the ghost does not make you a strong favorite to break and run most racks because you get BIH after the break. Look and break and run rate statistics amongst the pros, and you will see that they aren't even strong favorites to break and run each rack.

Very good B player or solid A?

I think the ghost is a reasonable determination for play level up to a B, but playing above that level requires a lot more than just the ability to play offensively, so it would be very hard to tell.

    Gold Crown vs Diamond Pockets

I don't see this being the case. 3 3/4 is ridiculously small, and 4" is very small also. Both are small enough that they change the way the game is played, making certain angles impossibility, and cheating the pocket much less realistic. No one wants to watch games where Pros miss all the...

to hell with call shots...anyone else gone back to "slop" and loving it?

That's an interesting thing to hear. Usually you hear things being said the other way around. I don't think I could play slop for any real period of time and enjoy it. I play it that way with my kids, but I can't stand it against any real competition.

"Hustling": Is It Sleazy Or Clever (Or Both)?

I do not find this to be a viable rationale to hustle people. One person's ethics should not be based on what someone else does. Also, a person should be able to go into a pool hall and try to match up with someone else, without having to worry that a great player is lurking there looking to...

    Entry-level pool table options

I would look on Craig's list. I am in the Chicago area, which is a good market for Craigs list, but you can find a very solid table for well under your budget if you have a little patience. I have seen many solid tables for around $500 that would fit your requirements.

Most racks ever run on a Valley bar box

I believe one can. I consider myself a high C player at this point, but I have run 3 racks of 9 ball on an 8 footer 3 or 4 times, over the past several years, and much of that was when I was no more than a basic C player. These things of course do not happen much for me, but every once in a...

    Emily Duddy

I just saw that Emily finished in the 7-8 position at the women's US open. This is a huge upgrade in her game over the past several years. Nice job Emily. I saw some video of her playing a few years ago, and she has really improved her game. It's nice to see someone make these kids of gains...

    4 1\2 or 4 3\4

I completely agree with this well stated post.

    4 1\2 or 4 3\4

I like 4 1/2 inches. I would not go smaller for many reasons, one of which is that it literally changes the game to go less than that. When I bought my table, I didn't know much about table setup, and just had standard pocket sizes put in, which ended up at 5". I hate that, because...

staying at the table after shooting a safety

I think it is just human nature to want to see the outcome of a shot like that, so I don't think you can get all too worried about it. At the same time, I think it is generally a good idea to be respectful to your opponent, so I think a legitimate effort to stay out of your opponents normal...

    Shoes

While i think there is value in custom orthotics, the research is actually quite clear that there is no statistical difference in the effectiveness of custom orthotics vs a good off the shelf brand like spenco or superfeet.

    Shoes

I would go to a good running store, and get fit for a good pair of running shoes. They have by far the best arch support, and are generally light weight, breathable, and also have the best shock absorption. Walking shoes are just a dumbed down version of these, and dress shoes are usually...

    APA --playoffs rules question

I don't think it is sharking as long as it is not done during the other teams turn. That being said, I myself would find this highly annoying. I am all for having fun, but it sounds a bit childish at the level and frequency you are describing it at. Cheering each other on is great, but maybe...

    '"5 and under" tournament question.

A 5 often has 3-5 ball runs. They rarely break and run, but can do so every once in a while. I would equate them to a strong C to C+ player. Their safety play is inconsistent at best, and patterns are average. They are a favorite to get out with 3 ball left, but it wouldn't be a shock to...

    Real Pool Reality Show crowdfunding

I am really shocked at homw much hate is going on in this post. I don't really love crowd funding myself, or donate to send me to a tournament threads, but this one is being blown way out of proportion. First, all he is doing is offering a video of these matches for a somewhat reasonable fee...

You-tube ripping us off must read

I disagree with this post. It is protectionism that will continue to hurt pool, and IMO, very backward instead of forward thinking. All putting those videos on an on-demand site will do is make sure that only hard core pool players see them. On demand pool will not bring in enough money to...

    Ko Brothers Question?

I guarantee it is not the cue they are using that makes their jumping so good.

    Heart/Passion

There are a lot of good thoughts on here. Just remember that there are also a lot of things that create perspective through experience, and a lot of things that can't be understood without those experiences (think Robin William in "Good Will Hunting" here). My perspective on a lot of things...
