Maryland 2012 14.1 Straight Pool Championships

Hi All, Lots of excitement coming up with the World Tournament in New York starting Sunday! Down here in Maryland we are gearing up for yet another installment of our 14.1 event. Peter Burrows always puts together a great event and this year is no different. It will be the weekend of Aug...

    Amsterdam Qualifier

Jude and Geoff, You could always come down to Maryland Aug 18/19th and play if you're looking for more 14.1. I'm pretty sure Lipsky and Barouty are attending as they do every year. Last I heard there are 5 spots left. I'll post some info in a new thread shortly. Andy

    Two rules questions

The rule that isn't so clear to me is when the last object ball is in the kitchen (not on the head spot) and you leave the cue ball in the racking area. So you spot the cue ball on the head spot right? Now, can you legally shoot that last object ball that is in the kitchen? Andy

    What to do??

Take the 3 foul for sure. My first thought was same as Dennis. But as sjm points out it takes perfect speed to not leave a 2 ball cut. And you have to miss the 5. But if I'm the other I could thin the 2 freezing you on the back rail.

    2012 Fury 14.1 Challenge Day 1 Recap

Wow! Those are some big numbers. Mike Miller's 175 didn't even hold up! Nice to see Mike Davis return to put up a bigger number to get in. Andy

New Shaft - New High Run!

Nice run, congrats! That break shot is a tough one. The inside english helps it pick up speed out of the corner but also makes it liable to spin around the rack without touching. Outside english would hit the rack but so much speed would be gone. Maybe best to use straight follow and try to...

Which break ball position do you prefer?

I watched 3 or 4 good players taking alternate turns trying to run 100 at the World's a couple years ago. I think it was Tony Robles, Zion and maybe Mika and/or Lipsky. This same discussion came up when Zion asked which ball to leave for a break shot. Tony said very definitively to leave the...

Hitting the side of the rack for a safe

Another finer point worth mentioning that I forgot. It's of course best to be hitting one of the inner two balls in the line of 4 on the side of the rack. I actually hit the object ever so slightly off center favoring the safer side. So if I'm hitting the ball next to the corner ball, I aim off...

Hitting the side of the rack for a safe

I'll reiterate what's already been said since it is so crucial...you must hit a ball as straight on as possible. Follow is also needed to keep the object ball from pushing the cue ball. Using no follow will result in a "push-back" of about an inch which is often a sell out. The other point that...

Handicapping a High Run Contest in a League

Hi Dan, I don't think that will quite work. I play in the Big Daddy's league near Baltimore, MD. We have about 18 players right now that play in two separate divisions. You play everyone in your division twice. In the first division we have Shaun Wilkie who runs over 100 a couple of times per...

    interesting stroke discovery

Hey Wiggly, Here's a drill I used to do 10 years ago. It won't necessarily fix your problem but will make you more aware of it and maybe that'll help in some way. It is the age old drill of shooting the cue ball from the head spot straight down table and get it to bounce right back into your...

    End of my Cohen match

Thanks for the insights Steve! I like Alex's "fake it til you make it". I think there's a lot of value in that. Players can definitely take you lightly (and me more so!). Last year I played Jasmin who fooled around in her first two matches but won easily. When we played - same thing until she...

    End of my Cohen match

Steve, I watched the end of your match and your description was nicely written. I thought there were 2 areas that made it even harder than you described. 1. The break shot into the side was heavy inside english right? That certainly makes it a tougher shot in my book especially at such high...

Must be Danny Mastermaker. He is young and getting better very fast. I didn't even know he played straight pool and would travel clear to New York to play! Congrats! Andy
