    Pool play that irritates you!

Really? In my experience newer players have no clue when to call a timeout. They usually wait until they have messed up and hooked themselves, at which point there isn’t much the coach can do.

I would love to have SVB mic’d up practicing 8b run outs talking through how he sees the rack.

    Pool play that irritates you!

Thanks. As I said it is hard. The situation of the better player asking you to do something you can’t is real and why some great players are bad at giving a time out. But the inverse is often true as well, as was very well stated in the other reply to your post. Often the lower level player...

This is an excellent post. Really well put.

    Pool play that irritates you!

So I was deliberately joking with some of these (like chalking too little). Escaping from my safety is of course to be appreciated, although when you think you’ve got em locked up and they hit it and get safe it’s frustrating (as an aside, that is what impresses me most about watching elite...

I thought about that, but honestly if my opponents were all unable to speak I would be quite happy!

    Daimoninzing New Valley

I think the shelves on the 7’ Diamonds are just right. They are not as deep as the shelves on the 9’ Diamonds and play just about right. Even a Valley with Ridgebacks plays too loose (IMO of course).

    Pool play that irritates you!

On your specific problem, coaching lesser players is hard. I’ve seen many great players be lousy coaches because they don’t understand the limitations of the other player. “Just draw the ball 2 feet” when the player can’t draw consistently. “Just play 3 rails with inside” when they can’t make a...

    Daimoninzing New Valley

I have the pro cut Ridgebacks. They narrow the pocket entrance to the same 4.5” as a regular Blue Label Diamond. But the Diamond has a deeper shelf, so you can hang balls in the pocket if you don’t hit them cleanly. The Valley slate has a very shallow shelf. The result is that some balls...

    Daimoninzing New Valley

I should add that the old Valleys with Ridgebacks play better and much closer to a Diamond. It’s just that it has its limitations, which I don’t think can be fixed given the shallow pocket shelf.

    Daimoninzing New Valley

I can’t speak to the new valleys, but at least for the old Valleys there is a limit as to how much you can “Diamondize” them. I have 4.5” pockets with Ridgeback rails on them and they don’t play like a Diamond. The narrow shelf on the Valley means balls drop that simply would never go on a Diamond.

    Men's 2025 World 8-Ball Championship, Bali, Oct.7-13

There you go ruining a perfectly good complaint with facts! Out of curiosity, do you have a breakdown of the stats for later in the event (like are the stats for the quarters/semis/finals similar or significantly higher as the top players surface)?

I don’t disagree that they do get out almost all the time. My point is that HOW they get out is the strategic point. When I watch Shane or Darren or Corey their patterns are always excellent (and not what I always expect). Some other pros that don’t have an 8b background (or 14.1 background)...

    Commentating pool matches

Most streams you have one camera and camera angle, so relying only on what they see on the screen would make it harder to make informed commentary (for example, the camera might make it appear a ball doesn’t go when it does). If you had professional production, then sure, relying on monitors...

    Men's 2025 World 8-Ball Championship, Bali, Oct.7-13

I remember some years ago CSI saying that 8b pro events were by far the most popular of their events in terms of viewership. I think the broader pool community of league players etc do want to watch 8b. And I agree with them - in many ways 8b involves way more strategic decisions on how to...

    Softbreak ?

As has been mentioned, the rule is subjective, but here is the text of the rule. So there is a rule. What is “forceful” is hard to define, but if you have no rule at all on break speed it can be a joke.

    Best shorty cue?

There are shorty cues that are specifically designed to be weighted more correctly. For example: https://seyberts.com/products/balance-rite-one-piece-shorty-cue https://seyberts.com/products/trouble-shooter-short-house-cues I have the trouble shooter (it was available locally for me). If I...

    Player Break Rules

Why, though? Aside from a quick bathroom break, why do I need to take a break until it’s actually my turn to play?

    Player Break Rules

In snooker they also have planned intervals during a match of any length. Like after 4 frames (regardless of the score) there is a 15 minute break. I like this approach (they recently did this at the Canadian 8b and/or 10b, the break was supposed to be after a certain number of games). I should...
