The Hustler Bank Shot Recreated with a twist

Agreed. BUT, when not frozen, jack-up rule sure would eliminate a lot of controversy/contention amongst the bangers. Actual cue angle not really as important as demonstrating you are aware of a delicate issue. Experienced/pro players should be educated enough to deal with the classic rules though.

The Hustler Bank Shot Recreated with a twist

I’d be more interested in the bank/combo he made early in the first match. Strictly a showy trick shot no straight pool player would ever consider trying in a real game. I have to wonder how many takes it took, as it was one of the few that wasn’t actually made by Mosconi. I’ll bet they had to...

    Longer cue for big tables?

Watching Ruslan win the 14.1 championship a few yrs. back, playing all shots with an extension attached, demonstrates that very tall players may well benefit. BUT, I just don’t get why anyone short would reach so far and shoot with a ridiculously long/unstable bridge, when a rake is handy. I...

    The Hustler is on PRIME

Probably. We tend to see things from our own perspective. But, pool was in the doldrums until that movie kickstarted a resurgence. Reviving an industry would seem a mark of significance.

    The Hustler is on PRIME

Though initially intended to appeal to a ‘drama’ audience, I’ll bet a viewer poll today would prove that over the years, the majority were pool enthusiasts.

    The Hustler is on PRIME

It’s too bad the 3-cusion scenes weren’t more extensive. Interplay between a wealthy amateur (on his own equipment), and a determined ‘killer instinct’ scuffler with limited carom experience (larger balls, likely ivory) makes for a very interesting interplay (though mostly to enthusiasts).

    A.E Schmidt tables

I think in the 30s, you could likely buy two nice older houses in a small midwest town for $9500, or maybe build a new ranch-style home with basement on a multi-acre suburban lot (?). A pack of cigarettes that sells for > $10 today, probably cost less than 10 cents back then. Though sin taxes...

    Rail break shots

Balls hit pretty firm down the rail tend to bobble in the pocket. Coming off the cushion at just the right angle sure seems a riskier endeavor if those two loose balls WERE there (easy break shot plus insurance). No doubt ‘I’ would end up stuck also (as usual), since precise angle off the rail...

    A.E Schmidt tables

I learned straight pool on a Schmidt ball-return table that looked BTW, a lot like the table they used in the ‘Hustler’ movie. Has anyone ever been able to positively ID the brand at Ames?

    Rail break shots

I agree. Wide range of options if speed control is off (especially if the 8 passes).

Shark Move Part 58 - Verbal Concession

It’s a concession when HE rakes the balls. Otherwise, I’m shooting.

    ‘The Hustler’

While Willie was ‘technical advisor’, he obviously had no control over the script: In the initial session, after Eddie tells Charlie “I’m going to take him”, he asks Fats “you miss?, and then “you don’t leave much when you miss”. Then Fats replies “that’s what the game’s all about”. Which...

FOULS IN POOL ... Everything You Need to Know

Those ‘big advantage’ situations would be rare, and if they did occur, would be merely your good luck. Why is it ok to give players a ‘free pass’ to touch OBs, but not to allow double hits? One typical way to avoid a double hit when the CB is close, is to jack up and draw. The 45 degree issue...

FOULS IN POOL ... Everything You Need to Know

I still carry the BCA rulebook, a venerable standard.

FOULS IN POOL ... Everything You Need to Know

“If it worked”, you would be very lucky, and the killjoys would resent your fun.

FOULS IN POOL ... Everything You Need to Know

Please elaborate. What ‘big advantage’ situations might occur while shooting jacked-up that would cancel the benefit of eliminating controversy & contention? Reminds me of the whining I get from barroom players when a called shot gets slopped in with kisses or extra rails. Kill-joys want to...

FOULS IN POOL ... Everything You Need to Know

The rural club where I sometimes play has finally ditched their goofy ‘local’ rule set, and adopted pro rules for tournaments. But, application is still very relaxed, which makes me reiterate my opinion re: ‘double-hits’. I’ve always been a stickler for the official rules, but since it seems...

    Toam v10

Way too many expensive products have been expertly counterfeited. I recently discovered that some vitamin supplements I purchased on eBay were fakes. Copied label was so well done, I only found out for sure because the lot # was bogus. Difference in caplet size made me suspicious, so I contacted...

    Diamond Professional Delivery Time

You may lose practice at steeper-angle side pocket shots, at least. It takes awhile, but GC players will eventually give those up totally.

If a gun was put to your head to choose one player to pocket a difficult shot for you, who would you choose?

So, successfully executing a perfect safety against an opponent capable of running out at any time doesn’t require as much skill as ball pocketing? Just because he didn’t have to make many difficult shots doesn’t mean he couldn’t. But, reconsidering the O.P.’s question, I suppose, since the...
