    What makes a shaft whippy?

This is pure structural mechanics stuff. The stiffness of a shaft is proportional to the 4th power of its diameter and inversely proportional the the square of its length. Given that the length of the shaft is essentially constant:: The stiffness is proportional to 4th power (d^4) its diameter...

    Constant Tip Shaping is annoying!

That is almost as evil as asking your opponent, after he has warmed up, if you can clean the balls before the match starts .....

    Constant Tip Shaping is annoying!

If you have to shape our tip more than 2× a year, it is too soft. If a cube of chalk lasts less than 2,000 hours of play, you are not chalking correctly. I get close to 2 years per single cube of chalk. Look for something in the 80-84 hardness test on a durometer.

Do you see Challenge (winner stays on / quarters on the rail, waiting to play the winner) tables going on anymore?

Both tables at my local bar are challenge tables. Anyone can put quarters on the table and get in line. {Its only $0.50/rack} Previous winner chooses the game--generally 8-ball, occasionally bank-the-8, occasionally last-pocket-8, occasionally 1-15...

A List of the Greatest Pool Players of All-Time

This is hard precisely because we have no recorded history of 17th century pool/billiards. It is also hard because there are 4×10**9 years left before our sun burns out. Many of the more ancient players did not play in tournaments but went from city to city giving pool its seedy nature.

    Another jump cue shaft question..

Ferrule:: yes--the forces on the tip of a jump cue are greater than a wood shaft can handle. XXHard is as soft a tip as I would put on a jump cue.

9 ball variant idea. How might this game be broken?

Make the break a jump shot over some barrier that is immediately removed afterwards. There is no way to hit 1-B at 30 MPH after jumping over 2.75" of interference.

A new measure of tournament toughness: Harmonic Field Strength

Back in 1983, the computer world had been using Harmonic mean to rank different computer systems and assign a single number which could be compared. This had been in use for nearly 2 decades--mid-late 1960s ... Then some mathematical people go together and showed that using the Geometric mean...
