The fastest and the slowest 9ball player

I know he's probably not the slowest player but Charlie Williams drives me crazy when I watch him. He'll get down over a shot and stroke for quite a while and you're sure he's going to shoot and then he gets up and walks around the table. He seems to do that an awful lot. I've seen a lot of...

    Efren Reyes vs. Ronnie Allen

I am a die hard Efren fan. I love to watch him play and I also admire his demeanor at the table. However, that said, Ronnie did possess a tremendous heart. It's hard to really guage just how good someone is if they don't have an opponent that takes them to the edge of the cliff. Ali had...

The "arc of the light" aiming system

Regarding your first question, the answer is no. However, I don't think it matters whether the player is a pro or an amateur, after they've practiced and hit a certain # of balls (I don't know what that # is and it's probaby different for everyone), they will start shooting with feel as opposed...

The "arc of the light" aiming system

Good Post This is what I was trying to say to DM when we were talking about aiming systems. I think that a system of aiming will help you when you first start playing. After you've shot a gazillion balls, you're mind becomes the system you use. Your mind is like a computer, after a while...

why do pool players always screw themselves?

I don't know about dumping. I think that is an awful rumor to spread without hard facts. I will say that playing in a grueling tournament like the IPT has got to be tough on the competitors. I know from my own experience that it doesn't take long for fatigue to set in while trying to play at...

    Pet peeves with the forum

My only complaint is that this board is so popular and there are so many posters now, you post something on a thread and that thread goes to the second page in a very short time. I don't really know what could be done about it. The solution would probably be more problematic than just leaving...

This thread reserved for JAM's IPT updates

Thank you for clearing that up! I wasn't sure how that worked. So given that there are several tournaments this year, the one currently going on and the one in September at Reno, how do they determine the KOH? Will it be whoever wins the last tournament of 2006 or will it be based on all the...

Why is Efren playing? I thought he was the current King of the Hill. Shouldn't he be waiting for the winner like Sigel did in the last tournament?

Please educate me, cue purchase question

Hawkeye, I have a Jacoby custom cue and I got it with 2 shafts for only $495. Of course that was a couple of years ago and I don't know what that cue would cost today. I also have a Pechauer and like it a lot too. Just a couple of other cues you might look at. Good luck!

Please educate me, cue purchase question

I wasn't talking about the cue you listed above. Are you trying to say that this is the cheapest cue that McDermott sells? You don't think they have cheaper cues?

Please educate me, cue purchase question

Thanks Fred. You are absolutely right. McDermott has high end cues and lower priced cues. One of the things I've always heard about McDermott is that their lower price cues, according to McDermott, hit as well as their more costly cues but just lack the inlays and other goodies.

Please educate me, cue purchase question

I agree, McDermotts all have a very stiff hit. What I do when looking at a new cue, especially the lower-end cues (price), is to make sure it rolls on a table with no wobble, butt and shaft together and separately. I rub my fingers over all of the seams in the cue, i.e., the butt cap, the...

You have $4,000, what table do you buy?

I would buy a used Diamond, Gold Crown II, commercial Olhausen 9' table. The important thing for me would be to find the type of table that is being played on at tournaments. I could care less what it looks like as long as it plays good.

An excerpt from "The Hustler" -- great approach to the mental game

Colin, We are in total agreement on the quote above! I think that the saying, show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser, means, at least to me, that it doesn't really matter what kind of loser you are. If you are a loser, you are a loser. And, like Bert said, a loser will find an...

An excerpt from "The Hustler" -- great approach to the mental game

Colin, In my opinion, what Tevis was trying to point out is that Eddie subconciously was looking for an excuse to lose. Bert said that winning can be a heavy burden to carry and that, for some people, it is much easier to lose because all you have to do is feel sorry for yourself. To me, what...

An excerpt from "The Hustler" -- great approach to the mental game

In a similar vein, I think it was Red Auerbach that said, "You show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser." I think that sums up what Mr Tevis was trying to say in much less than 20 words. Btw, I have the DVD of "The Hustler" and the dialogue is almost identical to the words in the book...

    Banking With The Beard

The 5 is dangerous because it's on the opponent's side of the table and it's hard to move it to a place that is not a threat to you. If you attempt to shoot a ball towards your pocket, you have to make sure you don't leave the cb in a position leaving your opponent a good shot at the 5, and...

Is Buying a Pool Table Worth it?

I had a table at home. The pros to having a table at home are: You get to practice more often and it's cheap in the long run You can practice using books such as "Banking with the Beard". It looks pretty stupid using aids or books at the ph, imho You can work on masse' shots and jump shots...

    Any news on Modesto?

I live in Stockton. The pickings are a little slim but here they are: Campos Billiards on Eldorado and Flora - just changed hands and I think the new owner, Tony, will fix the place up. It has been in pretty bad shape. They have a lot of tables but only 4 or 5 are in decent shape. This may...
