Tougher tables did not help USA pros for 20 years

OT regarding the original thread topic, but I agree strongly with these two statements. And, if there were a way to fix the second one, I think the first would be much easier to achieve.

Deflection question, explain how a stiffer CF shaft has less deflection.

Bob, my post was a joke on the "poolscholar" getting deleted. I know that many posts topics are repeated, and certainly will be as long as there are new people coming into the forums--hell, it seems like about 99% of the threads go OT in like the first page of replies, and many of them devolve...

Deflection question, explain how a stiffer CF shaft has less deflection.

Did someone get banned 20 years ago?

Any tips for not changing your grip pressure on the shot.

I too experimented with light (almost no) touch, but with my middle finger--forefinger dropped, and last two curled but not really touching. It's been over 30 years, and I don't even remember why I was trying to shoot that way, but I do recall it helping with smoothing out delivery. Of course...

    Carbon fiber shaft PROBLEM

Many so far are in favor of lubing the pin, but I would think friction on the faces might be more of a problem. Probably could not hurt to wax/lube both. However, when trying to remove a tight shaft, I will usually turn the cue point-down. This puts the larger end of the shaft inside the...

'Supplemental' Parallel or Perpendicular Aiming Spots/Lines

    Exactly what I meant. Thanks!

'Supplemental' Parallel or Perpendicular Aiming Spots/Lines

Apologies, as I started out with the simple idea but started complicating it. For example, I added the highlighted, "reasonably close to the cushion" bit, because I probably wouldn't use the parallel line if the target ball were >1 diamond from the cushion. The cushion is easier to use as a...

'Supplemental' Parallel or Perpendicular Aiming Spots/Lines

I often try to teach newer players to recognize the 1/2-ball hit, so that they are able to gauge how much more, or less, cut might be needed to make a shot (and with practice, this can be used to overlay, and maybe even transition from using Ghost Ball aiming, to using "sight pictures" for...

stats based on cut angles available?

I (very) vaguely recall reading that one of the pros would leave for 30-deg cuts, which is basically the 1/2-ball. Obviously, not possible in a lot of patterns, but makes sense when the option is available.

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

I both agree and disagree. If someone knows enough to aim at the fractions, and visually reviewing the results to find the consistencies/patterns and adjust to them, the yes that would feed into the 'feel' technique. BUT, if the shooter is already aware of the expected results (see chart in...

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

I disagree, because I believe that aiming for the fractions provides a specific target point, which should yield specific results, although there are caveats. Whether one can align and stroke well enough to make the precise hit(s) is an issue, as well as speed and 'table conditions'.

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

Silly, that's what bats are for....don't even know why they call them "baseball" bats....

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

Back to the original thread, I think when HFG (the OP) practices the fractional aiming, he needs to repeat practice until he can find a consistency within the ball-path results, and then can adjust as necessary. Of course, this can be summed up as "drilling until he gets a feel for it", but...

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

And that is also exactly my point--"you are aiming to make the contact points collide" is different than "focusing specifically on the thru the center of the cue ball aim line". When using a 'fractional system' aim line, the focus IS on the CCB aim line, so when shifting to joining the contact...

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

That is what I was referring to, without listing them. Plus, once I start thinking about cuts outside of the 1/2-ball, then I also start questioning whether the contact/impact point is still an aim point--but the aim/shot line is parallel to the centerline of the cue ball, which then leads to...

From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

Welcome, HFG When you describe "shooting at a point on the ball", I'm assuming you mean *directly*, as you would with "fractional" aiming. However, I would also think that using a "contact point" system is still picking a point, but it involves making contact with a reciprocal point on the cue...

    APA 9-Ball Foul Question

Absolutely what I was after. Thank you!

    APA 9-Ball Foul Question

APA 9-Ball is a points game--2 points for the 9, and 1 point for each of the others. A "dead" ball is one that is not scored for either player. For example, if you break and sink a single ball you get 1 point, but if you scratch as well, then the potted ball is considered "dead" and no point...

    APA 9-Ball Foul Question

Thank you, but do you have a link to that? I have also seen a page with similar, "Any balls pocketed prior to the foul being called will be marked as “dead balls.” However, that sentence is in the middle of a paragraph describing hitting the wrong ball, with more about it needing to be called...

    APA 9-Ball Foul Question

Only did a little rules searching online, before deciding to post this, and found fouls resulting in Ball-In-Hand, but not regarding fouls and 'dead' balls. Also, some league guys consulted ChatGPT, but I've seen enough AI stuff to not really trust it for this kind of thing. APA 9-Ball, a ball...
