You don’t need an insert for 3/8x10. It is a much coarser thread. I cut the thread directly in the shaft with a thread mill.

For these I usually live thread the butt for a Predator screw in plug which will take an extension.

Actually most precision rifle barrels these days are button rifled with a hydraulic ram, or cut rifled. Hammer forging is not that popular any more.

The bored hole is cut with a boring bar so is perfectly centered with the spindle. If done properly, this will get the gun drill started properly.
