Mosconi Cup: Two Matchup Predictions - Kaçi vs SVB & Kaçi vs Thorpe

Here are the two models we had time to run with data we felt comfortable with for two probable match-ups during the 2020 Mosconi Cup. If you've followed our previous posts then you may be aware of these metrics we have created. Nevertheless, an overview of the Metrics to Consider are as follows...

Methodical Aptitude: A New Pool Game Metric (sabermetric)

Here is a good example using the data we've compiled with SA and MA. Jeffrey De Luna is a type 3 player. His AVG time to shoot (TTS) is 18.9s. Where the fastest player is Ian Costello with an AVG TTS of 9.6s and the slowest player is Jui-An Hsu with an AVG TTS of 39.8s. Jeffrey De Luna has...

Methodical Aptitude: A New Pool Game Metric (sabermetric)

MA and SA is correlated with Shooting Percent (SP). To what degree, I'm not sure as I haven't ran that calculation yet. But, it is obvious to me that there is in fact a correlation (probably decently strong) because I designed the equations that way.

Methodical Aptitude: A New Pool Game Metric (sabermetric)

Three types of players: 1. Decisive. 2. Methodical. 3. Somewhere in the middle. If you are a type 1 player, use Shot Aptitude to gain an understanding of your effectiveness when being decisive. Increase it by playing defense, making your shots and being confident about your decisive action...

Methodical Aptitude: A New Pool Game Metric (sabermetric)

Players are not only downgraded in SA for playing slow, it also factors in rate of missed and foul shots with different weights and inversely proportional degrees of shot difficulty. So conversely, if your a methodical player such as Ralf Souquet or Albin Ouschan or Mario He, how effective is...

Methodical Aptitude: A New Pool Game Metric (sabermetric)

ABSTRACT: In brief, Methodical Aptitude (MA), discourages speedy play and encourages effective methodical measures of play. Similar mathematically to the controversial metric, Shot Aptitude (SA), this one we defined using inverses in the equation of SA. While shot aptitude expresses how...

Clutch Shooting Percentage (CSP): A New Cue Sports Stat (sabermetric)

I don't mean to downplay approximation methods as they are highly accurate; but they are not exact. The whole field of Numerical Analysis is approximations whereby you are minimizing ε, or your error. There is always exists some ε away from the exact value, regardless how small. It goes...

Clutch Shooting Percentage (CSP): A New Cue Sports Stat (sabermetric)

Yeah, it's just an approximation algorithm like Newton's Method or the bisection method for finding roots. The key concern in all approximation methods is the starting value; a better picked starting value will lead to a better approximation. And the reason why someone would care what the...

Not really obscenity. Sounds more Bayesian Statistics i.e., Markov Chains and Monte Carlo methods. i.e., the drunkard's walk. Which would make a lot of sense. Either way, we like FargoRate and have no desire to compete with you. Just putting that out there.

On the Quasisubjectivity of Pool Stats Data Collecting

ABSTRACT: There have been a few outcries on how we handle our data collection. Mainly, there is a notion that our data entry is subjective and will not generalize to a larger degree of players. This paper seeks to address these notions about how we handle subjective input and the policies...

Clutch Shooting Percentage (CSP): A New Cue Sports Stat (sabermetric)

First off, thank you for being respectful. Secondly, You make very real sense. There is a mutated perception in comparing sports, but it is a starting point to getting better results. We did change the definition of clutch for pool to include the whole game with emphasis put on consecutive made...

Clutch Shooting Percentage (CSP): A New Cue Sports Stat (sabermetric)

I get what you are saying, but that's not how clutch shooting is defined. Many times in the last 24 seconds of an NBA game the team with the ball will run a play catching their opponents off guard and possibly have an open shot. Easy or difficult it's clutch because they have to make the basket...

Clutch Shooting Percentage (CSP): A New Cue Sports Stat (sabermetric)

Please look at the definition of clutch. NBA considers last five minutes, last minute and last 24 seconds as factoring in Clutch. A player who has no other choice but to make every remaining ball or give their turn up for a high probability of a loss, would be considered most clutch, last 24...

There are different maximum likelihood estimators based on the type of distribution i.e. normal, Poisson, Bernoulli. So it would help if they said what distribution they were using. But, we think Fargo is a good system anyhow and are not too concerned about it

Yeah Fargo is definitely a good system and we use it in our databases. The only limitations to Fargo and the other ones out there is they don't have records on individual shots like we do and will have more of. We are analyzing every aspects of a game down to each shot, like each pitch in a...
