    Making 9-ball more interesting

    We weren't trying to make it interesting to watch, or to get the rules standardized or anything. We were just goofing around, and trying to make it interesting to us really. The problem we have is to find people to play with. Around here it's 9-ball, sometimes 8-ball, but straight pool...

    Lucasi = junk?

    Why don't you lay off the mindless patriotic bullshit already. We know you hate China, you made yourself abundantly clear before. I wasn't talking about super-cheap crap you find at Walmart, I was talking about *decent* cues made in China. Yes, there is the odd bad cue with cheaper ones, that's...

    Lucasi = junk?

    I think you got it backward. Chinese cues will last forever (as playing tools) if you take care of them. They don't "wear out" any faster than expensive cues. The trouble is, people who buy $100 cues usually treat them accordingly, and trash them in a very short time. When you buy a $100 cue...

    Lucasi = junk?

    20 years ago when I started playing carom, I wanted to buy my first cue. I asked my billiards teacher, who was a regional champion, what cue I should get. He answered "one that is straight with a tip at the end". And indeed he played with a $20 no-name thing and won titles with it. Unless...

    Making 9-ball more interesting

    Thanks for the link. It is an interesting ruleset. I especially like the option of giving the baby back to the opponent if he misses a called shot or drops a ball on a safety, but not after a successful safety (if I understand correctly). I'll see if I can get someone to try Grady's 9B tomorrow.

    Post your 10 consecutive practice run scores...

    Holy smokes, that is a lot of details :) I'd rather play than keep track of that many different stats personally. I don't think high runs are a particularly good indicator of your level as a player. For instance, if you do 5 x 25 points, and 4 great safeties in between that leave your opponent...

    A review of Keller's Pro Justa Bridge

    I haven't opened the flanges, but I think the felt is in one piece. Provided you can get your hands of a piece of felt with the right thickness, it should be easy to cut the openings with a pair of scissors or an exacto knife. Either that or replace the felt with balsa wood, or some other soft...

    Making 9-ball more interesting

    A straight pool buddy and I played a few games of 9-ball yesterday, experimenting several variations on the rules to spice up the game. Here are the changes we tried: - "No luck 9-ball": regular TE rules, but (1) 9-ball on the break isn't a win, (2) 9-ball legally pocketed after ball in hand...

    A review of Keller's Pro Justa Bridge

    Here's a quick update after using the Pro Justa Bridge for a few weeks: - A friend of mine found a way to dislodge the pin from its spiral plastic race. All it takes is forcing the bridge to turn using the cue guide plates while it is at full extension. A little creative bending fixes it in no...

    Lefty ran 16 balls tonight!

    I run 30 to 40 balls on good days. I suppose I could manage more if I played more aggressively.

    Lefty ran 16 balls tonight!

    He broke his personal record! Ok seriously, Lefty is me playing in reverse (I am right-handed). When I play alone, I play against myself left-handed. It creates a surprisingly varied and interesting game, short of having a real opponent to play with. Being the lesser player, Lefty usually plays...

    why?

    To me, the difference between 9-ball and straight pool is the same difference as between playing the guitar and playing violin: it's very easy to produce a few chords that sounds okay with a guitar, while it takes many months of training to produce notes that don't sound completely atrocious...

    Being Considerate

    I hate when I rack and my opponent doesn't wait for me to move out of the way to break. I've seen someone receive a flying cueball in the face and I don't really want that to happen to me.

    Fit and Finish.

    Indeed there is no perfect case, it all depends on the customer's wishes. For example, I just replaced my nice expensive croco leather case with a cheap Buffallo prime skai-leather case because the latter has cavernous side pockets that takes all my pool junk. I want my cases functional first...

    How would you play this?

    Not in this case but... What if you can get good position by not moving much, but great position with a slightly tougher 3 rail shot around the table for instance? How do you decide?

    How would you play this?

    I actually played #1 earlier, not much english needed, just follow. For some reason I tend to prefer getting position with follows and rails better than direct draws. I feel safer playing them. Maybe it's a carom habit...

    How would you play this?

    The guy plays the ace ball too slow, it dies in front of the pocket, and I am left with this. How would you play it? (1) My personal choice: http://CueTable.com/P/Player/?@2AavA3BKot2PFqU2kFqU2kXjL7kXKO3kaia3kThk2kGlE@ (2) My opponent's choice...

    Got a couple of simple rules questions

    Hello and welcome to the great game of straight pool! Yes, definitely. Just the pocket, which means that you can get lucky sometimes :) If the cueball ends inside the rack, you move it, otherwise as a general rule it stays there. Here's the chart to know exactly where to put the cueball...
