    Advice?

I only have one piece of advice for you: have fun when you play 14.1. If you stop enjoying yourself, better play something else, or even quit playing altogether for a while, then come back to it when you feel like playing again. If it feels like a chore, you'll end up burning out your interest...

My straight pool partner is cleverer than me

Hehe, yes you guys are right, I forgot he could have told me to break again. In fact I asked him tonight and he didn't even know that rule. I also didn't know an opening break foul didn't count in the 3-foul rules. This said, I was teasing him and he teased me back. We had a laugh and then we...

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

So if I want to improve my aim, I can either use your method (meaning I'd fly you over to Europe to teach me in person, because frankly I don't really understand what you're saying over the internet) or I can stick a hot needle in my left eye and get rid of the stereo vision problem altogether...

My straight pool partner is cleverer than me

I was at the pool hall this afternoon (these good folks stay open and do those like me who don't care much for Christmas a great service) and my usual straight pool partner and I played some. As always, we tried to rack the balls as best we could, and as usual the balls wouldn't stay put. There...

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

Nope. I happen to play with glasses, and I make sure my glasses' top frame bar is about perpendicular to my cue :) I've been bitten by the tilted head syndrome before so now I'm careful. But I think you may be onto something here: if people played with their cue sliding over their ear, their...

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

I shoot with the cue at the center (both hands). I know because the shaft slides on the center of my chin. I am right-eye dominant, and I definitely line up my right eye when I shoot guns, but when I play pool, I play completely centered. I tried shifting my cue to the left and to the right...

    Adjusting To A New Cue

Not always. I'm on the tall side, but not that tall (6' tall) and I crook my bridge arm because I like the cueball a little closer to my eyes for a better aim. But there are other advantages to a bent elbow: - you can rest your elbow on the table, which further stabilizes your stance. - If...

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

My understanding is that Gene's "middle" is a kind of sweet spot where the lateral positioning of your eyes is optimal over the shaft and you feel it's right.

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

The question wasn't for me, but I'll answer as well if you don't mind. It depends on how dedicated you are to the game in the long run. I personally have been training both hands for 20 years. My first teacher, who was a carom champion, told me it's a good investment, not only because you can...

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

Hey Geno, Thanks for the long answer. If I understand correctly, your method works on the entire body by concentrating on sighting, that is, line up the eye and the rest will follow. Of course I'm oversimplifying but that's the general gist, if I got the idea. Funny, I teach the exact opposite...

    A great rack break

I've never had that happen with that kind of shots. The cue hits at too shallow an angle to drive the ball into the cloth and jump the cueball, and the rail's edge isn't high enough above centerball to extert any significant downward force I reckon. Even with really hard "into the rail" shots...

    accidently called safe!

Could you explain the safety rule you're talking about? You lost me there. If you call safe and you pocket one of your balls legally, your opponent does NOT get ball in hand since you haven't fouled. So what's the advantage of calling a bogus pocket and pocketing your ball in another, over...

    The Hustler

Oh yes sorry, I didn't mean to say it's a movie with good pool in it, but a good movie with pool in it. It certainly isn't even remotely correct game-wise, and it's probably quite rough on the edges as a movie too, but I like how it turns out overall. Not as Oscar winner, but a good movie...

    The Hustler

I always thought it was a story about addiction. Eddy is addicted to the adrenaline rush of playing big-time and sacrifices his love to his vice. It could be pool, poker or any other addictive game. Funny how a good, subtle movie such as the Hustler gives everyone what they want to find in it...

Dominent Eye Quiz. Answer. What is the MIDDLE?

75% of my beginner students have a problem with the mechanics of their shooting arm caused by a variety of position problems in the hips, shoulders, wrist, grip etc... Once they find their elbow plane, their potting abilities suddenly increases threefold. At that point, every angle they look at...

    Making 9-ball more interesting

To be honest, there aren't many sports that are interesting to watch on TV if you're not into it. I was watching a golfer friend of mine watch some golf tournament on ESPN once: he was litterally transfixed. To me, the TV program was boring to tears. After a while he noticed me staring at him...

Well it's not exactly pool, but my favorite is this one: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1789371924005542099# 38 minutes of joy :) Then of course there's the entire Poolhall Junkies movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6zGMNoUtIg

Could this happen to a pool player?

$50k is nice, but he'll burn through that money quickly. So if he's extra-sure to be good enough to win more tournaments, or if he reckons he can find another, better job in the near future, then he made the right choice. Otherwise he's a fool. But I think there's probably more to that story...

    Anybody tried a Twister tip?

http://www.twistertip.com/ I'm wondering what the tip is made of. It looks like rubber. If it is, no wonder it can spin balls :) I'd consider one to get permission to do masse shots at my poolhall, but somehow I don't think it'll convince the owner...
