Tight pockets are NOT good for the game!

Before anyone tightens the pockets on their table, we sound make them upload a video of them beating the ghost. Twice. We'll allow 1/8" for every game they beat the ghost by.

Should All Skill Levels Have an Equal Chance to Win a Weekly 9-Ball Handicapped Tournament?

Yeah, I don't think it's fair if I work hard on my game just to give up a bigger spot to someone who won't drag himself to the practice table. And if someone is a weaker player getting a lot of weight, it shouldn't take a whole lot of practice for him to outrun his rating and win games...

    Kielwood vs Carbon fiber

The slickness is a big advantage to CF. It's pretty rare for there to be much fiction through the bridge.

I was a Witness to a Murder in the Pool Room

I guess Vinnie's family didn't eat much polenta.

The Hustler > The Color of Money > ???

I haven't watched the Queen's Gambit so I don't know how the game is treated. I don't know that chess is easier to understand than pool, but I think the average person is aware that strategy is very important. I don't think the average person understands how difficult pool is, or what makes it...

Should All Skill Levels Have an Equal Chance to Win a Weekly 9-Ball Handicapped Tournament?

Those are good points. A $10 entry tournament is often close to the price of table time. I learn a bit more from competing than watching so it's a good deal. $50? I can't keep tossing that out every week with no chance of a return. I guess it depends on your finances and if you can afford to...

    Golfing; Keith McCready Style

I could listen to Earl's stories for hours. There are a couple of videos of his road stories that are worth checking out. I think they can be found on vimeo.

Tight pockets are NOT good for the game!

They do have grass, clay, and hard courts.

The state of pool in the U.S. A 'Rip Van Winkle' view.

That's just me. It takes a while for stuff to sink in.

The state of pool in the U.S. A 'Rip Van Winkle' view.

That's true, especially with banks. I don't think I'm 80% but I do okay in game situations. Then I throw 15 balls on the table to practice banking and there isn't a single bank available. On a related note, I was playing at the pool hall the other day and was surprised at how much I could...

Should All Skill Levels Have an Equal Chance to Win a Weekly 9-Ball Handicapped Tournament?

There are a couple of line tournaments around here that I like. Win, move up a table, lose move down a table. People tend to find an equilibrium point so everyone can play straight up. If you outrun your seeing you can cash. It's a great way to handicap an event and challenge and reward all players.

BAR RULES and DIRTY POOL – Why Official Rules are Important

As long as they aren't planning ball in hand. That's chickenshit! Seriously, that's the problem with bar rules. There's no penalty if you scratch, and you can even gain advantage. I can see ball in hand being too abet of a penalty if you aren't playing sets, but you should not be rewarded for...

Tight pockets are NOT good for the game!

I have the opposite view, at least for pro players. A game to 150 is much more interesting when the high run is 35. Do you need to know the name of the guy that made the ball, too? I have to cut the cue in half and count the rings.

Tight pockets are NOT good for the game!

Pool is deceptively hard. If you are 90% to make a shot, you are 53% to make six, 43% to make 8, and 39% to make 9. I like 4.5" pockets, if I'm shooting well i can play the game like it should be played. Much tighter than that and the game becomes a slog.

    Online Auction: Janice Joplin’s 1920s-Era Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. 9’ Table

I was wondering that, too. I think pool tables are a different market. Not many people are looking for a 1000 pound collectible that takes up an entire room. I didn't get a real good look at the condition either.

    Let your speed level out

I've decided I don't need to get better, I need to be less bad, at least at the current stage of my game. It's rarely the shots I can't make or the position I can't play the costs me games. It's bad decisions and careless errors that do me in. In 10 shots, I'll hit one really well, 4 quite...

Tight pockets are NOT good for the game!

Yes! If I can't make more than a couple of balls in a row, how can I learn to play patterns? If it's all I can do to get the ball in the hole, how will I learn to spin it. Pool becomes much more interesting when you can develop and execute strategy. If a player struggles to meet the minimum...

Surprised at the "stickiness" of Fargo ratings

I never even noticed that tab before. It said I performed at +88 the other day. I guess my hats work is paying off.
