exactly . . . you have a whole continuum between a shaft with a standard ferrule, and a shaft without . . . vary the length, and thickness of the wall, to come up with a ferrule offering a more direct hit, while still offering some protection to the shaft for durability.

good point! shafts without ferrules are going to wear quicker, and need replacement more often. also people used to playing with ferrules, would have to make adjustments to their game to play without. can certainly see the benefits of the more direct hit.
