    "Hydraulic"...??

I used to sometimes hear this term from older players about 30-35 years ago, IIRC. I understood it to mean a high-performance force follow; you know when the cue hits the object ball, hesitates and then accelerates forward a moment later. Kind of the exact opposite of a draw shot, where the...

how are ya'll doing in league ?

So I still haven't lost a match since my last post here. In fact, I haven't lost a game (in league) in over a month and a half I think. And I'm not playing God-like pool. Far from it, IMO. The other night I allowed 3 of my opponents at least 3 turns at the table per game. The other guy I...

When does equipment make a difference?

Short answer: at your level you probably can’t tell the difference between a great cue and a average one. You can notice the difference at the edges of the performance envelope once you have enough experience. Like maybe when you’re a 6 or so and you are shooting at a more advanced level.

how are ya'll doing in league ?

Thanks. Yeah, lack of consistent practice hurt my game the most in the last several years. So one week I'll play really well, the next I might struggle to string two balls together. Or from one game to the next. Really focusing on my fundamentals helped some. Understanding that I'm not the...

how are ya'll doing in league ?

About half-way through this session now. Ranked first by 24 pts., won 19 games in a row (pays to get lucky). Still might not take first, as I work nights and might still have to miss a week or even two before all's said and done. But I'm playing some good pool consistently, something that's...

Question about prize money at the pro level

Quick question: What's the disparity, if any, between men's and women's pool/billiards players earnings/prize monies? Like other sports, do men's tournaments at the pro level feature higher prize money? Or are they basically equal?

Components Necessary to Become a Pro Level Pool Player?

Most of the above is just wrong. My initial thought is that it was sarcastic. Either way, don't take the above seriously. I'd like to add one more 'rule.' The ability to self-evaluate precisely. Without it you'll never amount to anything. And it's amazing how many people just don't have...

    Green Fee For League?

Never paid a green fee for league. I have for a couple different tournaments; $1 and $3. Allows us to play without jacking quarters into the tables all night. At the end of the day though, a buck is nothing. I'd pay it and not think about it for a second. If you can't afford $4/month or...

How many of you own a sneaky pete?

I don't gamble anymore, at least not on pool tables, and when I did I never had a SP. But I used to see guys and play guys that had them. Never fooled me, but probably could fool your average bar player. Earlier this year I bought my first SP, a Meucci purpleheart with a barbox pro shaft...

Is playing in a league really worth it?

Probably the best answer to your question was given in post #3. At least in terms of potential benefits to playing in a league. I'll simply add this: to improve as a player, your skills need to be constantly challenged. Whether your anvil of choice is league play, or tournaments, or...

Great Sports Quotes That Could Apply To Pool

Jimmy V.-"Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding." Ric Flair-"To be the man, you have to beat the man." Lou Brock_“Show me a guy who's afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time.” Bobby Jones-“Competitive sports are played mainly...

Pool on TV - a fantasy

On TV? I thought the premise of this thread was how to get pool on TV? Or why it's a pure fantasy? Or did this thread jump off topic already?

Pool on TV - a fantasy

The point I was making is that you first have to have a sell-able product on the screen. If you have that, then you can attract advertising dollars, which is where the money is. The reason the big national sports can afford to pay their players tens of millions of dollars is because of TV...

Pool on TV - a fantasy

I've had this conversation dozens of times. Bottom line: pool is almost wholly cerebral; the real action takes place in the players' heads. But even if that weren't a major problem, it's still boring because the players are boring. It's like watching motorcycle racing. You ever notice that...

    Bar Table Efren

Meh . . . just another zig-zag shot. Would've been really special if he'd played the combo with the 8. Or even better if he'd played the carom with the 8 going into the top left corner and the other ball going into the top right corner.

    Why change primary Playing cue???

I can think of three reasons off the top of my head. 1) Some POS steals your cue or you just lose/break it somehow. 2) Your tastes or likes/dislikes changes as you grow older. For instance, when I was in my teens I loved my fire engine red Camaro, with the 3-inch lifted rear end, the...

bar table 8 ball, dealing with a bad break with clusters

Honestly, I don't understand what the "good form," "bad form," thing is about. Never had anyone get bent about exactly how or when I broke up a cluster. In most cases I'll opt to break up clusters early in a match, IF I think I can get away with it. I just have more confidence in my ability...

    "Drills" league?

A solid "maybe." A drill league sounds a lot like many shooting sports that have come into being in recent years. Contests like steel challenge, the Bianchi Cup, 3-Gun, and the like. In those sports a contestant is required to run a set drill for time and accuracy against his opponents...

Getting mad when playing against better players

Playing players that are better than me is always fun. I nearly always play better, focus more, pay more attention, etc. I enjoy being challenged. Playing inferior players is boring. I tend to lose focus, my mechanics suffer/get sloppy, and I go out of my way to find a challenge in the game...
