Watching top flight players negotiate games for the cheese

taking fouls kick banks Banking balls into clusters/the stack lag banks lag cuts High side-Spin long distance Clearing your opponents pocket Spot Shots all variations of 3 rail banks... I could go on but I do agree that top tier rotation players can QUICKLY surpass high level specialists but...

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

When I was discussing this post with my wife(as she started snoring) I got into the NFL MLB NBA NHL player numbers, base salaries etc. I almost went there here but I'm glad someone else did.

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

I agree with that assessment in the short term, plumbers/carpenters etc "can't be replaced" But I think that's only in the near future. Looking down the line a bit, I don't believe that at all. My first grandson was just born and I fear there won't be any sort of job for him in 20 years...

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

SJM, what would you say is the minimum for WORLD CLASS speed today? Use a player we all know if you can think of one. Brandon Shuff? Josh Roberts? Like John Morra is probably solidly in for world class speed but how much does he make a year in tournaments really? I'm too lazy for research...

Watching top flight players negotiate games for the cheese

Happens ALL THE TIME. Money can be funny. Might not feel great that day. Might not quite have enough time for a real session. Lot of reasons to say NO to games aside from skill. A lot less reasons to say YES unless you're certain of the outcome and even then maybe you want to save this sheep for...

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

I don't believe this is possible for kids who are playing sets for thousands regularly. So this kid makes 2-5k in a few hours and it's fun too. Then they are going to collect grocery carts or drop fries for $30-40 a shift? NO WAY you're getting that kid to show up. Not trying to be cynical. I...

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

Don't want to talk about any one player specifically when I say this but I have to say I agree. I've said many times in the last 20 years how thankful I am that I didn't chase it FULLY. I was pretty damn serious about the game and competed at a pretty high level in my early 20s but for many...

    Short Rack 8 Ball

yeah, you're right lol But my point remains :-) Imagine how much better their win rate would be if they just got better navigating their suit with only a few other balls in the way. So many of their games are lost because they can't FINISH it off.

    Short Rack 8 Ball

I personally think APA 5 and below level players would benefit GREATLY from playing short rack 8 ball. They often get into 3-6 inning games where if they could just run 4 balls at the end reliably, they would dominate matches. Short rack puts you in that situation immediately.

    Fedor’s “new” chalk…

Exactly. It's not "performance enhancing" in any truly tangible way. That being said it's still way worth it. And I'd bet most people that don't play 5 days a week can get a solid year out of ONE cube of pagulayan. It cost me something like 10-15 cents a session, as expenses go, that's a...

GENUINE ZAN TIPS FOR SALE - BEST PRICE IN THE MARKET

Have been curious to try. Current tip is a Kamui Black medium. Which one is closest to that in composition/feel?

    Fedor’s “new” chalk…

yeah not sure how Pagulayan could be improved upon but I agree. I bought 2 pieces at first. Immediately lost one in the first hour. Bought 3 more pieces and that was nearly 2 years ago, still on my first piece. Stuff grabs like crazy and is clean as can be. Barely need any.

    Break Stats -- 2026 World 8-Ball Championship, April 2026

Racking is a skill just like every other part of the game. I’ve never used this particular rack but im Sure it’s not that bad. More likely they don’t know what they’re doing OR they just don’t put enough effort/time into it.

    Break Stats -- 2026 World 8-Ball Championship, April 2026

They broke standard far more often than second ball. And I’d wager that 0 of the second ball breaks were the “pinned at the top rail” ones. Cue ball rarely leaves the racking end when you hit the second ball. Anyway, the racks were certainly inconsistent, I’ll agree with you there. I’m sure...

    Break Stats -- 2026 World 8-Ball Championship, April 2026

The cueball winding up on the head rail has zero to do with the rack. The cueball is 1/15th of the weight of the rack and winds up there quite frequently regardless of how the balls are racked. Being "pinned" with few options is just random chance.

    Break Stats -- 2026 World 8-Ball Championship, April 2026

Couldn’t agree more. Often when I’m watching several of the top guys I disagree with the paths they choose to take but it doesn’t matter when they execute as well as they do. BUT once in awhile. I liken it to straight pool in that way. Picking apart a rack is an art but you can still get it done...

    Break Stats -- 2026 World 8-Ball Championship, April 2026

Great work as always. And thank you for compiling this. If I'm reading it right, seems to me that being the first player to make a ball was worth 68 or 65% to win the game. Little lower than most of us would assume! Everyone always talking about how easy the game is for the pros they never...

    Automatic Shot Clock

Pretty sweet idea. Like someone else mentioned, what if I hit a stop shot 3 railer? That would be an issue. What about breaking 8 ball or 10 ball and you stop the cueball dead but the other balls take a good while to come to a stop. And how bout between games when the cueball is just sitting...

PGA Player Mic'd Up/Pool Why Not?

So on tour the PGA players are only doing it between shots and there's loads of downtime walking to it. I doubt any player would agree to talk about a shot during their preshot routine or actually hitting it and that's essentially what would have to happen for it to be interesting in pool. No...
