You can certainly use an edge finder if you can slow your spindle way down, but you would never do it off the headstock. It's not nearly accurate enough for that. Even the sides of the chuck wouldn't be accurate.

If you're afraid of crashing into the pin, you can use a piece of paper/aluminum foil/shim/whatever as a feeler instead of touching the actual pin. It's too bad you're not setup to do a touch off. If you can, setting up a touch off would be high on my list of things to do. Then you can...

That bleeding into the holly is a common problem also, especially with oily woods. The first coat of whatever sometimes dissolves and smears around oils, dust and things like that. Again, one thing that helps is sealing with CA just before final sanding and finish, keeping in mind the admonition...

Ha ha...well, as always try it on some scrap first. It worked OK for me on a pen, but it offers minimal protection...just enough for finish sanding. Could be useful, though.

A trick pen tuners use is to saturate the Holly with thin CA before sanding.

I don't know anything about how it would work in a cue, but I can tell you that swamp Ash is significantly lighter and less dense than what you would normally think of when you think of Ash. Makes nice, light guitars, and looks pretty under a sunburst. :)

I said that, not Tommy. He just didn't do the quote thing right. Read my first post. I toss them because once it starts wearing a bit, it changes and starts making a mess. For $.25, I can afford to toss it every day or two. MC is much better in this regard. It seems to be pretty much the same...

Tip's fine. Kamuis are the same way. Probably has more to do with how I like the tip more than any performance issue since I never miscue regardless...maybe a couple of times a year. I like the way the Ultraskins play best of all of them, so the tip stays. :) I'm used to playing with...

I have the same issue with my Ultraskin tips...have to scuff them a lot. That's actually why I tried MC in the first place. Yes, it helps. Instead of every rack or two, I'm just scuffing a couple of times a night.
