Matchroom 2023 UK Open (nineball), 30May-4June, Winner $30K

There isn't much of a need for a shot clock. It's not on TV and therefore subject to a schedule (although it will be for the final 2 days and therefore a shot clock will be in place). Also pro players are (mostly) too patient to get upset about a fellow player taking their time and therefore...

What order to shoot the stripes with ball in hand?

    I couldn't agree more.

What order to shoot the stripes with ball in hand?

Me too. My intention is to make every ball without any side - and 13, 15, 11 ..... gives me the best chance to make it. That's the theory anyway - in practice if I over or under run on a shot then I might have to use some side, and this pattern gives me the best chance to play a "recovery shot"...

Matchroom 2023 UK Open (nineball), 30May-4June, Winner $30K

I agree, although I'm also not sure about the exact numbers. I think an elite player from any billiards discipline would be in a similar situation. They can all shoot straight and have a deep understanding of the concept of cueball placement , which are the only "fundamentals" you need be a...

What order to shoot the stripes with ball in hand?

15 at first looks the obvious (to me) first shot to release the 10 for later. It's also a shot I would suggest to my opponent if they were a weaker player and asked me for advice in practice or a friendly game. However, I would take the 13 first (take your pick - short corner, short side or long...

    8 ball vs 9 ball

I know what you are saying but I think there comes a point for all of us where we have the choice to decide to win or learn. Nothing at all wrong with formats or rules or point systems that "level the playing field" (at least for a while) either.

    Memorial Day

Have you guys really got no clue that this a billiards forum and not an "America" forum? Jeez, next you'll be claiming Jayson Shaw should play for the USA.

Maybe there's some serious money on him. This would decrease his odds. It wouldn't be beyond a few gamblers to bet big on a "wildcard". It's unlikely, but if a snooker or English 8 ball player is potting well and the layouts fall into place for them then they have an outside chance. Judd Trump...

Matchroom WNT Ranking Event (Nineball)- Scottish Open 2023 (26-28 May)

Great comeback performance for Shaw - the win probably means the most to him as it's his "home" Open. Zielinski will surely learn from this (not sure if he was trying to place the cue ball and overdrew it, or was going for a more general area and rather carelessly made a rookie/amateur error of...

    Black Shafts?

The easiest and cheapest way is to paint an old wood shaft black. That way you get to look cool (in the mirror) and it plays exactly like wood.

    UK open Dynamite!

I think the US Open has a particular prestige which will endure. However, I think that the UK will be harder to win because the "rest" of the field will include more players from other cue sports. While these players will struggle at, or to get to, the business end of the tournament, they are...

    A new 9-ball break format

I couldn't agree more. But I'm not sure how this is relevant to a discussion about whether or not the rules of the game, in this case related to the break, should stay the same or not.

    A new 9-ball break format

Not an issue under WPA rules as the 8 is either respotted or there's a re-rack.

    A new 9-ball break format

This ignores the fact that the break rules have already been changed time and time again. With the development of the "soft break", rules were changed because a particular break gave a player who had mastered it a huge advantage. Rather than encouraging everyone to master it, tournament...

    A new 9-ball break format

I agree, consistency is needed. We all have our preferences but I think the game at the elite pro level is fine now (although it is still healthy to have continuing discussions about the rules - this happens in all sports and there is actually far more controversy in badminton at the moment)...

Are precise snookers in pool more difficult?

Yes. Many snooker safeties are essentially the same shot because the the reds are where the reds always are and the baulk colours are where the baulk colours always are.

Are precise snookers in pool more difficult?

There are way more lines in pool. Snooker is a very simple game at the elite level where the colours tend to stay on or near their spots and the play is around the reds. In pool there is far more variation in terms of layouts. At the mere mortal level, however, snooker can be complete chaos.

English 8 ball cue vs Snooker cue?

Yes, this sums it up. Generally, pros and other serious English pool players will use a cue with a thicker tip when they play snooker. I think the transition back and forth is fairly straightforward. However, English to American/Chinese pool and back is a bigger jump. When Gareth Potts first...
