Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

Yes, this is exactly how the rules should be enforced. It's not rocket science (pun intended).

    Ultimates Rules

"Golden" break was never an actual rule. It was used only in the speed tournaments with a fast shot clock - which I think is a good rule in that particular format but an absolutely awful rule in any kind of "normal" 8 ball where the object of the game is to pot your suit and then the 8.

    Ultimates Rules

They are actually derived from WPA Rules. A number of years ago (I think around 2017-18) there were two competing sets of "English" pool rules - "Blackball" and "World Rules". Players who played in one organization's tournaments were often banned from the other. The Supreme Pool Series (or a...

    Ultimates Rules

It doesn't because you don't choose the suit, it is chosen for you. It reduces the chance of the breaker getting out after the break, so it slows things down. Having a choice speeds the game up.

    Ultimates Rules

It doesn't. It also doesn't favor the better breaker.

Justin Bergman is on a mission

Great player, beyond world class. But, not quite anywhere near a Bobby Fischer type and a bit of a know it all. I hope he proves me wrong.

    2026 World Snooker Championship: April 18 - May 04

Aye, just imagine if he hit two balls almost simultaneously and the kick changed the direction of the cue ball. The pressure on the physicist-referee would have been insane 😉

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

If it's too close to call then it's too close to call. There is really no need for a referee, or a group of observers, to use the "physics" to influence said referee's decision based on observation of which ball was contacted first. "We know best" or "I just know" isn't objective. I have the...

World Top 200 Players by Fargo Rating (April2026)

It's two things. One is that there really are more and more elite players. The other is that more data is being recorded and fed into the system - the "pro" (in terms of level of play) game is being recorded way more than it used to be. Even good old Wikipedia doesn't have records of group...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

...in which case the referee should revert to watching for contact between the balls. If they are unsure, go with the shooter.

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

Agree 100% with this. There's a reason why particle physicists (who are amazing mathematicians) ask even more amazing mathematicians to explain to them the outcomes of their experiments. Likewise, a referee needs a camera to make a decision based on the physics. Asking a referee to use their...

Who is the best player of the last 40 years not to win a major event?

Interesting question. Less interesting, and ridiculous and not even close, answer by the OP. My answer - no idea. Probably but not necessarily a Filipino.

2026 JOY Heyball Grand Masters Finals

Amazing game. Zhang missed a couple of fairly easy pots in the 62nd and 63rd racks. Pressure, pressure, pressure.

Pro Pocket Size TOO Small for 9 Ball

Surely the whole point of Banks is that it is actually supposed to be difficult (which is why it is played in the first place) and that a percentage anywhere near 50% is pretty damn special? Why make it a B&R game? We have long sets in 8 and 9 (and 10 ball) for that.

Pro Pocket Size TOO Small for 9 Ball

Snooker is very much an offense oriented game at the top level. The break building nowadays is through the roof. Safety play is important but it is just one small part of the game. In 9 ball, even on slick cloths with 5" pockets, deciding when to go defensive can be trickier than in snooker - it...

Higher skill pocket billiards players - 9 ball or snooker players?

Yeh fair enough - that's my own bias making me misread what you wrote. I still think you are overestimating the ability to cross over but I hope to be proved wrong. It is certainly within the realms of possibility and it would be a great story.
