There are a lot of things that some people do and that you couldn't understand why. One of the main interest of a realistic billiards game is to try and retry some solutions to better understand the game, what is much easier than in real world. :)

This functionality is included in caromball, try it. We all prefer to play on a real table, but caromball allows to work and understand a lot of things.
