    Quick Feedback for Book

Haha, I only aspire to be F. M. Hotine. (He wrote/edited a few English billiards books in the early 1900s, and seemed to have a really good nose for what makes a good book. He had one book of billiard shots that had the bare minimum explanatory text, and is really nice to read because of it...

⚠️How Many Here Collect Books on Pool?

I've just finished my first Amazon print-on-demand self-publishing project (here), and I can recommend the process. Let me know if you want a steer. (I'd probably take a copy.)

A little help with my stroke

To add to the 'grip hand too far back point', because your forearm is angled back instead of hanging down vertically, that might explain why when you shoot with gusto you need a short backstroke. The arm doesn't have very much farther to go.

When you say check it on phone, kindle, and tablet, do you mean a real device, rather than the preview software?

    Quick Feedback for Book

Thanks, I will. By the way, did you use the Kindle Preview software for your ebook, and if so did you find it was a good likeness for the kindle version? I've used some 'smallcaps' font to match the formatting in the original book, which shows up in Kindle Preview, but gets lost when I use...

    Quick Feedback for Book

Thank you! I'm prepped for a kindle version too (mostly as a learning exercise for my own benefit). I extracted the text from PDF scans and proof-read carefully. A couple of points have been dilemmas. I've had strong hunches about the cover and a point in the content, but the hunches differ...

    Quick Feedback for Book

I was going to say that hardly anyone plays English billiards at all now (so hardly anyone would know the new rules), but on the other hand, those few might be my only customers! Mitchell doesn't go into great detail, and to people who do play English billiards, the history about the different...

    Quick Feedback for Book

Excitingly, I'm going to make an old book (1902) available on Amazon print on demand (the demand being a landslide that may eventually reach double figures!—Still, I want to make it the best I can.) Please could I have your feedback on covers and the short introductory and concluding blurb I'm...

How do you rest and recover effectively in short breaks?

(Inspired by Evergruven's 'Starting strong' thread.) At events where you have breaks between playing - let's say an hour or two - how do you rest and refresh yourself between playing? Any equivalent experiences about taking effective breaks in a normal work context or similar? (For context...

    starting strong- ?

I think this question benefits from looking at the (slightly) bigger picture too. For example, I tend to start slow (let's say half an hour), hit my best form (say 1.5 hrs), then get worse to a level below my starting standard. So if I'm playing a 3 hour session, I could have 30 mins 'slow'...

Dumbest thing you’ve done in a match?

In an 8-ball league match, local rules said that after a scratch the referee (someone from one of the two teams) had to pick the ball out of the ball return tray, but it was inconsistently enforced. So the other guy scratches, leaving me a simple win. (And I'd had to work *hard* to turn a...

    When do you say "enough"?

Wow. You had a great outcome, you've learned a massive amount from this drill. Kudos to you for registering specifically how you were missing your shots, and of course for working out how to fix it so effectively. I'm not an instructor, but it sounds to me like it's worth considering building a...

    Pool cue gift!

You could buy him something else - a case, if you know how many cues/shafts he takes with him when he goes to play. Or a decent new set of balls if he has his own table. The worst thing is spending a lot on something for someone that they don't use (or don't want to, but do to be polite), and...

    Emily Frazer/ 9 ball Fix

First, it depends what they want. If they want more back-and-forth in each rack (instead of run-outs), two ideas come to mind: - Shim (not actually narrow) the pockets - it would give something for commentators to talk about too. I don't really know much about shimming pockets TBH, as it's not...

How do you train for endurance?

The psychological part of this is something I've been interested in for a while. I don't have a great answer to the question, but I've put together a few parts of the puzzle. - The psychology of 'self-regulation' (more or less, 'willpower') has found that willpower works like a muscle, so can...

    Interesting shots from Russia

He's astonishingly good sometimes. That's a great video. He uses follow in a double kiss on one of those, although shooting quite softly, not force follow. (I'd expect at high speed, the double kiss would happen before the follow bit.
