    CB Testing

I wonder what difference this would make on a lag.

    CB Testing

Those pics show a big difference considering how slowly the balls would have been rolling. (Which suggests at faster speeds in normal play, pretty large differences in CB position: an important variable, albeit difficult to adjust for.) But on the other hand, by the principle of objects falling...

Are there any videos of Dr Dave playing in a match or league setting on YouTube ?

There's quite a lot of useful information in there that I've not seen anywhere else. Do it!

Why only USA and Europe in the Mosconi Cup?

I think it would liven things up. If you added China (or Asia) and each team played two shorter matches, you could increase the variance so everyone had a shot at winning (for fan interest).

    Recognize him?

That green cloth makes me think of English-style pool. My gut says someone who looks like Massey but isn't. If the group decides it's not Mike, I could dig out a couple of books on English pool and check...

Getting tournament ready, last 3 days?

That's a great insight. I assume your view is it's applicable in pool too? Obviously not a physical sport in the way tennis is; feeling switched on is crucial, but you don't want your adrenaline to spike...

Getting tournament ready, last 3 days?

I think I've seen you mention Loehr before. I'll add him to my Amazon wish list. You must have made quite an impression to get a job offer! I think I've found what I click with now (a patchwork of techniques, but something from the Inner Game has been the biggest). I'd like to think that...

Getting tournament ready, last 3 days?

Robert Nideffer's 'Psyched to Win' was the first sports psychology book I ever read, back when I was a high school basketball benchwarmer! (Although I found it after a tape cybernetics program that a basketball coach recommended to me. Back in the days of cassettes!) Interesting. I remember the...

Getting tournament ready, last 3 days?

This is interesting too - the separation between the message the student needs and the underlying reasoning for why they need it. I suppose in self-teaching sports psychology I've always been in both roles - the car and the mechanic. With that background, it feels a little sad for the car that...

Getting tournament ready, last 3 days?

This is a really interesting avenue. I'm tempted to ask for some examples, although perhaps it's better in a separate thread, where everyone can chip in with their stories.

Getting tournament ready, last 3 days?

Is this based on any particular measures, or a general intuition? It's not always clear whether mistakes are choking or just natural variance, but I would have put the number a lot lower, from my own experiences. But that's me playing in very minor tournaments (so pressure would be lower)...

Following with interest! This is a great question for the instructors.

    Not getting any better?!

The thing about 8-ball, is if you run most of your group but don't get out (and the other guy has most of his balls on the table), you're a pretty big underdog. So when a player is getting better, and playing attacking pool, he might keep putting himself in a position where the worse guy has a...

Review of Virtual Pool 14.1 AI

I wonder how much money there is in pool videogames. I'd guess that anything outside Miniclip 8-ball must struggle to wash its face. Here's an idea: What if you built machine learning software into a video game in such a way that players could provide feedback on what the computer did, and a...

    Looking after old books

We used to keep hens, and we used diatomaceous earth for them. I guess it's the same principle. I never knew ink didn't completely dry. I'd expected book care to be complex, then from what I'd found online it seemed like it really wasn't. It's reassuring to know that it is, after all!

    Looking after old books

Looking good! Are you still planning to republish McCleery? (I didn't realize the original was paperback.) Repair and restoration sounds like a good skill to have. Was there any particular learning source you'd recommend?

Ground Billiards in Stained Glass and a Virtual Tour

Ahh, I just had a look on Google and Glig Gamena is the same book as Sports and Passtimes of the People of England. Hendricks shows one of the ground billiards woodcuts in his History of Billiards, but only in black and white. It always surprises me to find color pictures in these old books...
