What to do when we have a bad day

You know, I'd completely overlooked strategy and shot selection when I was looking at the diagram before. (I've also realized I've not started Playing to Win yet!)

What to do when we have a bad day

Blood thickness is one I'd never considered before. That might be something to think about. Sucrose and fat is interesting too. I read a book 'Willpower', which is about self-control/regulation in a much wider sense than the title suggests. The scientists who researched it tended to use sugary...

What to do when we have a bad day

I'm not an instructor. I've discovered that when I'm playing badly, by keeping by nerve, following my routine, I can ride it out and start to play better again, coming right back to my best within, say, 3 racks. Having that experience a few times was eye-opening. It's now something I take some...

Multiple Chinese players suspended, pending investigation

I'm not sure there are enough players left for it to be a bigger problem! With so many players involved, you'd have to expect some third parties to be aware and betting. Perhaps the question is whether it was third parties or the players who were leading the thing. If the only sanctions are...

Multiple Chinese players suspended, pending investigation

Doo we know what 'being concerned in fixing matches' means? (E.g., knowing and not reporting, or knowing in a game they won so didn't dump)

How can you fix the sidearm stroke?

Leaving aside the stance issue for a moment: I think writing about pool is a peculiar challenge. Generally, when we write, the process is about trying to find words that fit our ideas, whereas when we read, the process is about assembling meaning from the words in front of us. So reading isn't...

A (hopefully) more analytical approach re: Is pool a sport?

I think you're right in your analysis. But I don't think it's quite a 'game' either (using the traditional game-sport split). So it's either in the gray area between the two, or we need another category.

How can you fix the sidearm stroke?

Out of interest, is this something you've done a lot of (coaching league team players)? I'd be interested in your approach and the kinds of results you get.

    PUSH OR PULL

That's an interesting take. My view was the exercise was something similar to reiki, where the effect is all in the mind, but nevertheless, you do experience an effect. (The snooker stance feels tense and tight to begin with, but gets easier over time as your body adapts.)

    PUSH OR PULL

No, that's not what I was getting at. The experience is supposed to feel like the elastic band (or cue) is leading the movement (even though it isn't in reality), which is different to feeling like you're pushing, pulling, or throwing the cue.

    PUSH OR PULL

Here's an interesting twist. I managed to have one lesson with a very good snooker coach, and one idea they gave me was to imagine your backswing is pulling back an elastic band.. and then the pause.. and then the elastic band pulls the cue forward. So in this method, the cue should feel like...

    Does shaft stiffness affect english?

Fair enough. It seems like the more you learn, the more 'conventional wisdom' has to be abandoned. Thank you. I'll go through Dr Dave's link later on. I've read the Illustrated Encyclopaedia, but if it was in there I don't remember it.

    Does shaft stiffness affect english?

Conventional wisdom here in England is that shaft whippiness affects CB deflection when using English. (Low deflection is generally considered to make it easier to use English and still pocket the OB.) Does America agree?

Clearing a nearer ball to pot a farther ball

Here's a thought that popped into my head. I've occasionally worked it out the other way round: look down the line between the edges of the CB and blocker ball to see what's the maximum contact point I can get (either the thickest or thinnest possible cut, depending on which side is being...

Clearing a nearer ball to pot a farther ball

If it's marginal, elevate the butt of your cue slightly and shoot hard!

    Contact time

The 'soft tip - more grip' argument is intuitively very appealing. And consider what people used before leather tips: just the wooden end of the cue, perhaps with a substance similar to chalk (people used to twist the tip of the cue into the ceiling). The introduction of the leather tip (and...
