    2026 World Snooker Championship: April 18 - May 04

Hendry has acknowledged that the fields are tougher now. Basically said that in his prime era you could count on easy opponents your first several rounds. Now you’ve got so many good players that early round “shockers” aren’t really that shocking. Ronnie’s titles came in the era where he’s...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

The “he” in my sentence (that Yapp was in the road and he couldn’t see the shot) was FSR. FSR couldn’t see the hit - the ref could see the hit but just blew it.

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

If you’re talking about the Yapp situation, there was a referee directly watching the shot? And Yapp was in the road - he couldn’t see the hit. What else was he supposed to do? Maybe he could have moved to see the shot, but even that is questionable as a potential shark move (getting out of...

McManus is completely comprehensible to my North American ear. Higgins is far more of a challenge. Hendry of course is not an issue. Let’s go Class of 92. Two into the second round already.

How to Judge SPLIT HITS … Everything You Need to Know

This an interesting question. Is it better to call the foul when 99 percent of the time it is correct but 1 percent of the time it’s not a foul, or is it better to say “on thin hits like this I cannot rule out a good hit so I can’t call a foul”? One could argue that regulation 25 supports the...

Same slot also on the 7’ Diamonds. I’ve fished chalk out for people using a house cue.

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

I couldn’t disagree more. Often only the player knows he fouled. An ever so slight feathering of the CB. Brushing an OB with you arm as you stand up. Or the player knows with certainty they fouled with a double hit. In all those situations IMO the player can and should call the foul. A close...

How common is it to see the players around during the tournament? Like do you see a player in a restaurant or something?

OB slow roll to the pocket and stops at the very edge - foul

I wonder if the OP’s friend was confused by the lag rule (whereby if the CB comes to rest past the nose of the corner pocket it’s a loss of lag)? That’s the only instance I can recall where there is any “imaginary rail line”.

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

I would say the vast majority of pro golfers and pro snooker players. You regularly see snooker players calling fouls on themselves in the biggest events. It’s a culture thing - they were raised in the game knowing it was expected. There is hope for pool though - I remember Mickey Krause...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

Golf and snooker both come to mind. In both sports players are expected to call rule infractions on themselves and they regularly do so on the biggest stages. Obviously snooker is the closest analogy. In snooker the players routinely call a foul on themselves for touching an OB, feathering the...

    Fedor’s “new” chalk…

I would say the majority of skids come from chalk marks on the CB that contact the OB. So if you and your opponent are both using the new chalks, there should be much fewer skids no matter what all the bangers before you do. Also, even if your opponent isn’t using it, that has no impact on...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

Sometimes I feel like Dr Dave and Bob Jewett and other people who understand the rules are trying to sweep back the tide of ignorance. It’s tough work and they are combating decades of misinformation. (Like how many league players want to call a foul if you adjust the CB with BIH using your tip...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

I agree in terms of getting the call right. The problem is that this is bad TV. You have a ref (or the ref and the head ref) looking at images on a smart phone we can’t see. It’s like the old days of NFL replays when the ref would go under the hood and look at footage the viewers don’t have...

Oops I did it again (Yapp's) foul in a final, a second time!

When I watched it there was an English voiceover which was completely understandable to me.

The first paragraph is excellent advice. I will definitely try that. As to the second, thankfully at least in my area neither of those have surfaced.

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

This came up just last night as I was warming up for a small weekly tournaments. Two players were playing a friendly warm up game and one shot straight through a frozen ball. The other was surprised and asked if that was legal. First player said yes and then both asked me. I explained that it...

Here is more from Wikipedia: The most common definition of mainland Europe excludes these continental islands: the Greek islands, Cyprus, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, the Balearic Islands, Great Britain and Ireland and surrounding islands, Novaya Zemlya and the Nordic archipelago, as well...

I was very surprised to hear that Scandinavia wasn’t considered part of continental Europe. So I went to Wikipedia and found this interesting explanation: The Scandinavian Peninsula is sometimes also excluded even though it is a part of "mainland Europe", as the de facto connections to the rest...
