    Wood or carbon?

I remember 50 years ago we had the same discussion about tennis racquets, and that many of the top pros were using wood racquets because they grew up playing with them and that is what they were used to. Now you occasionally see one at Good Will or a garage sale.

$30 for a piece of chalk...What's your favorite chalk to use?

You haven't tried the Felson chalk. Makes Silver Cup look great. I was given a box of that and I couldn't even give it away, just ended up throwing it out.

    Dynasphere Tungsten

Yes, the ugliest good ball out there. I you happened to buy a set and just can't stand looking at these any more, I'll be glad to take them off your hands. They'll go as a backup set for a non-profit.

south west with a maple forearm and butt is a bad choice?

Actually, I'd probably buy the $400 dollar cue, a bunch of Dr Dave videos, then spend the rest on lessons . . .

    Cloth Reversal?

Thanks to everyone for their help, and especially to those who offered to donate toward new cloth. This was, by the way, for the local VFW hall. As it turned out, the cloth on the donated table we set up was very lightly used and a little faded, so we went with keeping it on the same side, and...

south west with a maple forearm and butt is a bad choice?

I figure if I had a multi thousand dollar SW cue, my game might, maybe, improve just a little. If I was really serious about improving my game for that money, I would buy a $400 McDermott and spend the rest on lessons.

    The slickest/smoothest carbon fiber shaft?

For those who thought there wasn’t much in common between pool and, say cross country ski racing, here’s an experiment I just did that is interesting. I dabbed some ski wax remover (I have Toko HC-3, but Swix and Rex make the same thing) on a rag and dissolved some Swix HF-4 (fluorinated very...

    Cloth Reversal?

Thanks to JimMorrisson and muskyed. I’m going to go in tomorrow morning and finish up the job with one of the other guys, then plan on playing a couple racks to see how it works. I’ve already offered to buy new cloth if it doesn’t, so we’ll decide then. To ChrisinNC’s point, they probably...

    Cloth Reversal?

I’m working with a non profit to get a donated table set up. I’ve gotten it pretty level, within about unit on my engineers level which is about all that makes sense on a floor that isn’t as stable as you would like. Did a demonstration with my 0.05 mm/m EDA level showing that two people...

    Help identify a mystery cue!

I have something similar that I use as a guest cue. Labeled brand is Sly Foxx, and I think it was made by Kaokao in Taiwan.

    The slickest/smoothest carbon fiber shaft?

I know what you mean. I hate it when I have derelict shafts.

    New Predator chalk

Yes, the colors. Why do the manufacturers assume that the only color table out there are deep blue? No chalk is naturally blue. There are no inexpensive natural blue pigments, in fact blue pigments are singled out in classical writings as a symbol of wealth. Essentially all inexpensive blue...

What types of wood are cue butts made of? How do they affect the way a cue hits?

The main reason everyone focuses on maple is that it is good enough, readily available and relatively common. There are dozens of hardwoods that are harder, stronger, higher rupture modulus and higher density than maple, but because they are tropical, you don't see them as the dominant tree in...

Shaft wood theory - cue manufacturers.

Yes, it should. The profit margins are huge, and should start down as you have better competition. I am not going to be convinced that a simple, radially symmetric stick should sell for three times as much as a tennis racquet and comparably to a bike frame, both of which use several times the...

    New Predator chalk

They need to do something to get back in that game. Their current 1080 chalk works well, but it isn’t even a remote competitor to Taom for cleanliness. I keep the rest of my five pack around in case I play somewhere that I don’t have to vacuum up afterwards.

Shaft wood theory - cue manufacturers.

Agree that we have a number of quality companies out there, all trying their best to machine perfect shafts from imperfect materials. If the quality of the shaft is that dependent on some characteristic of the wood that can't be completely determined beforehand, we'll continue to produce...
