I have JPs but never use them. Though I only have soft cases, the short trip from the car to the poolroom doesn’t present much of a hazard. Plus, I would only drop the butt while in the process of screwing or off the shaft, and fooling with JPs too would merely enlarge that risk (IMO)...

Just like its legal to lay your cue on the table to sight a bank shot angle, as long as you don’t let go of it, the same should likely apply to using a ‘ball-in-hand’ cue ball to measure with. But if you do, you probably shouldn’t be allowed to let go of it unless you shoot it from that...

Reminds me of the common 14.1 practice, back in the day, of hovering the rack over an un-pencilled cloth to determine if a break ball was in the rack area (we thought it was legal if the triangle was never dropped). Likely would be a foul today (?).

Same here. I bought a cheap one years ago from an online catalog house to use as an extra bridge stick/guest cue, and it was dead straight & played fine. Back in the 60s, pulling a straight one off the rack of house cues was quite rare.

I have a similar device, opaque though, with knurled sides (very helpful), that I needed frequently (no break cue) back when I used LePro tips. The pre-compressed milk duds I install now never spread, and since my tipping tool trims off any excess, the burnishing device just gathers dust.
