Poolroom/bar in South Bend, IN with 9’ Diamond tables?

Guy who told me about it said it was on McKinley, but I’ve searched the web thoroughly and drawn a blank. Anyone know name/where?

Film oddities or coincidences in The Hustler

Though the movie revitalized pool’s popularity back then, it IS too bad its dark overall aspects (conmen/predators) didn’t present the positive atmosphere of the ‘neighborhood poolroom’. What is needed is a new movie that does. THAT world well deserves a thorough ‘looking back’! A much...

? I just touched ‘reply’, and started typing. The site did the rest. Go figure.

Film oddities or coincidences in The Hustler

Though the ‘Hustler’ movie DID relate many applicable life lessons, it alway struck me as rather unlikely that an experienced con man/hustler like Paul Newman depicted, would lose his composure and let his emotions get away while alone, playing nine ball with rough characters in a seedy dive.

    2023 American 14.1 Championship

I think the most glaring advantage men hold over women may be a more powerful stroke, which might well be more helpful at 9 ball. Women playing the men at 14.1 may at least produce more safety battles, and less emphasis on high runs (?), especially with tight pockets that restrict a more...

Film oddities or coincidences in The Hustler

Watched Eddie Taylor perform the simpler version back in ‘61 as part of his exhibition trickshot routine. You can set up a fairly complicated arrangement if you use a very long bridge (like Moses parting the red sea, the cue zips thru and pots the money ball).

Film oddities or coincidences in The Hustler

In the mid/late 50s, I could I.D. the year & brand of every ‘big 3’ model. The Packards, Nashes, Fraziers, Hudsons, etc. were dowdy ‘off-brand’ cars and all looked pretty much alike to me. The major brands (Studes included) had the most outstanding/futuristic styling and advanced/sporty...

    Looks like a mid-50s Nash, or a Henry J (?)

    Solitary scoring

30 yrs. ago, I bought a wall mount drink shelf with # wheels installed (matched my Diamond table, but not sure where it where it came from). But, you could easily install wheels in any furniture (router), or, (like me) in a small plastic briefcase (box knife) to carry to rooms where no scoring...

    Ball Retrieval Question

My memory isn’t great, but I don’t recall anyone shagging balls in the ‘Hustler’ movie either (?).

My thought on tourney tour and tight pockets

30 seconds is still too long. I am always at a disadvantage because I suffer from a subconscious embarrassment (fear of ‘delaying‘) issue that usually causes me to rush my shot selection or position approach (before thinking through the situation adequately). A shorter time clock would thus...

    Diamond table question

Interesting. I don’t recall any previous mention of tracking deviation concerning worsted (Simonis), unlike tradition snooker cloth (?). After the Diamond crew recover/level setup job (early 90s 9’ Pro table), slow rolling shots hit uptable near the rails tend to veer just slightly toward the...

    Rules question

Haven’t seen the latest BCA book, but current WPA rules DO allow 14.1 template, so it’s likely been updated.

    Rules question

Podunker had it right. The 14.1 placement chart in the BCA 2018 rulebook has a misprint! (see my 4:11pm post yesterday). Current WPA & older BCA book charts designate: CB in rack goes to the head spot when 15th ball in kitchen, unless that ball interferes, in which case CB goes to center spot.

    Rules question

Exactly on the kitchen/head-string spot would not be considered ‘in-the-kitchen’.

    2023 American 14.1 Championship

Ask Gary at Q-Master. I would assume they saved what 860 they COULD get for the tournament room (?).

Any Reason Not to Use a Brush or a Vac With a Brush Attachment on Cloth?

Growing up, the local room used a hand brush every night (before they covered the tables), and brushed the chalk/dirt into the (net/drop) pockets (likely not worsted cloth then). In the 90s, I started frequenting a room where the owner used a damp rag to wipe down the tables every night, and...
