I’m with you. Jump cues SHOULD be banned, in ring games especially. Jumping over the edge of a ball with your playing cue is something else though.

Which is why the incoming shooter should always have the option, thus forcing those great ’kick’ attempts. Nothing more galling in a ‘no safety‘ ring game, than having the player that hooked you successfully kick/hit, slop something in, and then run out.

Upon reflection, since spittoons were made of brass, it’s more likely that ball must have hit the cast iron legs of the wooden theater seats against the wall, that the spittoon was next to. I DID once have to fish a ball I hit off the table out of that same spittoon though.

This comes as a surprise. I thought calling ‘safety’ was only done in 14.1. I had assumed any ball legally pocketed in 8 (or 9) ball, you were stuck with, and thus had to continue shooting (?).

That likely WOULD be the correct procedure (in a perfect world). If your car uses too much oil, it’s more ‘correct’ to rebuild the engine rather than add an extra quart occasionally. For now, I’ll just avoid rail shots that pass the side pocket.
