    Slow play by pros

The most irritating thing about slow players (and I’ve played the slowest) is when they take forever to decide on a shot, get down to shoot, but then change their mind, thus starting the whole routine over, AND THEN REPEAT THE PROCESS MULTIPLE TIMES! Maybe instead of a shot clock, some rule...

If the lag is a skill shot, there's a better way

I get it, but if both players are warming up on the same table, somebody has to go first. I always liked to have a practice lag especially fresh in my mind before the official start, and if I hit one before my opponent gets down to shoot, it likely wouldn’t count, according to the rules. Might...

If the lag is a skill shot, there's a better way

Just curious: When starting a match, I’ve alway hit a couple of casual practice lags to gauge cloth & cushion speeds, before we get down for the ‘official’ LAG, and no one ever objected. Do pro tournaments now typically discourage or restrict that?

    APA finals diamond table

When down really low, the diamonds can’t be seen, regardless of color, I wish there was some configuration that could make them still visible on a lighted area (with your chin near the cue), but still maintaining a level rail surface (?). Some kind of mini laser maybe, implanted in the diamonds?

Smaller Pockets Don’t Always Play Smaller … Dr. Dave Evaluates His New Rails and Pockets

The problem with thicket facings, is while the corners still drop nicely, the sides are now near impossible at any steep angle. Shots that would typically fall in readily on a standard GC, are no longer even considered.

If the lag is a skill shot, there's a better way

Actually, I think lagging first may offer an advantage, since your opponent must shoot before your ball strikes the foot rail, he may then feel rushed and thus not as able to muster enough concentration. Of course, any competent pro in that position would merely stall & thus repeat the lag.

If the lag is a skill shot, there's a better way

I’ve always wondered whether an advantage could exist related to who lags first (?) It’s like watching the start of a sumo match.

    ‘The Hustler’

All my gear is mid-late ‘50s/early 60s. Everything newer leaves me cold. Nothing beats the tonal character of old wood & USA-made vacuum tubes from that era.

    ‘The Hustler’

While watching, yet again, another broadcast tv movie rerun, I noticed in the final straight pool ‘rematch’ scene (after Fats breaks and leaves Eddie corner hooked), the bank/carom shot Mosconi set up was virtually un-missable! All Paul had to do was hit the pack anyplace, as the placement of...

Waxing the cue ball? WTF is Kaci talking about now?

I wonder, do today’s kids gamble at video games? Are ‘gamers’ considered ‘sportsmen’? The demise of the neighborhood poolroom has ruined gambling, not the other way around. People gambled at pool, just like they gamble in the casinos now: everyone thinks they can beat the odds. I grew up...

Templates vs usual wooden racks and break balls

You think breaking from the headspot is easy? Wish I had a dollar for every time I circled the rack with that two-rail breakshot attempt 😁.

Templates vs usual wooden racks and break balls

I believe that is already the routine in a refereed tournament, regardless. Even if the ball is outside the line, it has to be marked & replaced if it would interfere with racking. If a very close ball doesn’t interfere when using a template, but would be inside if a line had been drawn, then it...

Waxing the cue ball? WTF is Kaci talking about now?

I think a rule may prohibit ‘cleaning’, not placement/positioning. Of course, you could just as easily apply some sort of slime to your bare hand, though that might effect your stroke (and foul your wrap). An ultra-slick glove likely wouldn’t be any detriment.

Waxing the cue ball? WTF is Kaci talking about now?

Isn’t there a rule against that? If so, I would think a ref might object if a player picked up & placed the CB with his bridge hand.

    Pool Chalk……Constantly Evolving……..What’s the Future?

How come a Scandinavian product (?) is so much cheaper when it comes from china? Personally, I’d rather pay more to make sure it actually gets delivered in my lifetime.

    Pool Chalk……Constantly Evolving……..What’s the Future?

All my life I’ve placed the chalk on the rail right-side-up to keep it clean. But, since V10 is round, and harder to manipulate, I’ve started replacing it upside-down, since the rail (like the balls & cloth) still stays clean!

    Pool and Race

There were 3 poolrooms in the small 50s midwest town where I grew up, and the one with the best equipment/players had a decidedly racist management. I usually laughed along with my teenage peers at the racial humor bandied about there, but had to confront a disturbing awakening when the black...

Templates vs usual wooden racks and break balls

Guess I should have been more specific re: ‘old school’ (no outline on the straight pool table in the ‘Hustler’ movie! 😁). In all the years gambling at 14.1, I don’t recall anyone ever asking the room owner for a pencil to draw one. ‘Guessing’ re: whether or not racking would interfere, was...

Templates vs usual wooden racks and break balls

Old school rules moved the breakball only if it interfered with racking (I never agreed with a mandatory outline). So, like back then, you would likely have to guess.

Why Pool Leagues Should Embrace “ALL BALL FOULS”

Certainly, the seriousness of your intention to enforce the rules should likely be made clear before the match begins. That never occurs to me usually, as the most honorable (and typically, also most game) opponents will take that as a given. Your comment re: ‘Moment of Truth’ rings especially...
