    Is this legal

I could see where it might be useful though. When lining up complex combo shots, the diamonds don’t help since you can’t see them when well down on a shot. You shouldn’t need a rail marker for simple bank shots, but calculating the tangent angles for multiple balls (for me) requires eventually...

    A Portable 14.1 Scorekeeper

Confusion often results since typically, the initial rack score location becomes the total, and the following rack goes on the opposite counter.

If you could build your dream room that actually has a chance to stay in business…

You just described the last Chicago Bensingers clientele 😁. A private club can provide a serene environment, but the only new blood are those invited as guests by members. A room open to the public, but well policed is preferable. Those that appreciate a great/well managed room will obey the...

If you could build your dream room that actually has a chance to stay in business…

Quite obvious, nowadays. . But, even if I were a hardcore lush, if playing for a world championship in one of those ballroom/tuxedo 14.1 tournaments of yesteryear, would I be sneaking jolts from a hip flask during a serious game? Like music, alcohol is just another distraction in the end. They...

If you could build your dream room that actually has a chance to stay in business…

Of course. The ‘hourly rate’ (especially for the VIP section) would have to be astronomical, and the clientele would thus be limited to well healed seniors & high rollers. It isn’t like that type of room would have much competition though. Guess I’m a dying minority of enthusiasts who...

    Got some Pagulayan chalk

It doesn’t roll if you don’t drop it. Regardless, one swipe with the cue, and it usually rolls back (a square one that landed on an edge is typically harder to recover).

    Chalk on The Rail

Funny how these ‘unwritten’ issues come up. Traditional things always just assumed. Two pieces of community (Master) chalk on the table, and players with their own private pieces almost never set them down (I keep mine in a side pants pocket), and would NEVER leave them on the table when their...

How it feels trying to get a nit to bet!

True, but it kills a lot of action when lesser players are so scared, they think they couldn’t win no matter how much weight you gave up. Some are so game though, they won’t accept a spot from anyone, but still, losing can get old. I would rather play a lot, and a closer contest is just more fun.

High Running Your Age in 14.1 for Seniors 60+

Old school straight pool enthusiasts would likely only play non-gamblers unless they could learn from someone better. If YOU want to be the one that learns, you may have to face reality and ‘cough up’ small stakes, at least. Of course, some derive more satisfaction from merely teaching.

GENDER IN POOL ... Do Men Play Better Than Women? ... Recent Legal Trial

Likely similar reasons there are few female chess grandmasters. On average, women excel at ‘multitasking’, while men ‘focus’ better.

Alternative to the Willard Tipping Machine

The Willard is worth the $ (IMHO). A perfect example of the old ‘right tool for the job’ adage. A justified lifetime expense, if you plan to play a lot in future. Results always perfect (I’ve never had a tip come off), and oversized tips always turn out beautifully fitted.

GENDER IN POOL ... Do Men Play Better Than Women? ... Recent Legal Trial

Women tend to be shorter, so they don’t quite see the ‘bird’s-eye-view’ of the table layout that taller men see. As a result, they also must play with a bridge or extension more than the taller men. Large breasted women often have trouble with the ‘pendulum’ stroke, though that never inhibited...

    Interesting 8 ball rule question

Just more reasons I like to insist on ‘old school/all fouls’ rules in private games. We have all become sloppy & careless since OB fouls were excused. I can’t remember the last time I shot jacked up over a frozen ball without accidentally touching it with the ferrule.

    5x10

I have to wonder what 10’ tables Greenleaf won all those championship tournaments on (?). I played on the 10 footers at the second Bensingers basement location, but don’t remember the brand.

    7 breaks not 107 but....

Hitting the pack high & hard with a steep angle works better for me with worn cloth/triangle-racked sticky balls (rather than barreling thru), since you typically end up away from the crowd at table center, but the break ball is thus farther from a tight pocket, and a cross table scratch is also...

    7 breaks not 107 but....

Welcome to my world. You are likely not using a template to rack (like Shaw)😆. When he barges into the pack, they spread like Moses parting the Red Sea. When I do it, they stick to whitey like flypaper.

    Sharking

I’ve never in my life laid down/hid my speed, and I’m surprised anyone would admit to it. I may be gullible, but I believe Willie’s similar claim. Some consider ‘greed’ the best action draw. I have always chosen ‘aspiration’ instead. Everyone wants to say they beat the best. That’s the...

How Pool Evolved from Royalty to Bar Rooms

I would be interested in a societal analysis of why billiards devolved from a truly revered competition sport, to an inane barroom pastime.

Trigger Finger……….Has Anyone Ever Had This Medical Problem?

I had the problem several years ago. Wore a brace for awhile, but eventually had to have corrective surgery. Very minor procedure (the binding tendon sheath is opened). NOW, I have the problem again with (go figure) my actual ‘trigger finger’ (Rt. Index). Worse in the morning. Numbness also...
