    Would you use this shaft?

I’m making a cue for a friend. I finished the shaft today and it’s very light at 3.2ozs. It doesn’t have a brass insert (will be a 3/8-10 wood joint) or any metal in the joint ring, it’s 30” long, pro taper, and 12.9 at the tip. I knew it would be light from the start but not sure about it now...

    Cleaning linen phenolic collar

Some help here gents please. I’m making a cue with a cocobolo forearm. When I finish the cuts the coco dust/ oil is staining the white linen collar. I’ve tried cleaning it with denatured alcohol and sanding it out with no luck. What can I use to get this clean? Thanks guys

Where to use wood based on grain structure?

I have a beautiful piece of curly hard maple but the grain isn’t the tightest.. maybe 6 rings per inch. Would the pros use this as a handle or forearm? Does this make a big difference in the feel of the cue? Thanks guys!

    Live center

What centers are you guys using? I have a #2 Morse taper tail stock and the body of my live center is bulky and it’s hard to get close to the centerline, like if you were cutting a shaft. I’d like to find the long Cnc style point but usually metal lathe centers are tight and don’t spin freely...

    USPS lost goods

I always read stories on here about lost cues in shipping. Has anyone ever had any success retrieving them? I just bought some wood and the box was damaged, 3 beautiful pieces are gone! Is it a lost cause trying to track these down? Any advice? Thanks mike

    Roasted maple

Anyone have any experience using this for cue butts ? Pros and cons? Is it strong, weak or the same. Just curious. I see it’s popular for guitar makers and looks very nice. Isnt it the same process that produces kielwood..?

    Weight removal and balance

Finishing my first cue and I need some opinions. The cue is 60” long and has a balance point of 19 7/8 from the butt end. First question, is this a good balance point? Secondly, It’s a little heavier than I wanted at 19.5 ounces I was shooting for 19 or a hair less. Should I drill a small hole...

    3/8 screw depth

What would be the ideal amount of thread engagement into the shaft for a 3/8-10 modified screw? Just curious. Some screws that you can purchase seem to be threaded long enough to give 1 1/4 of length. I’ve seen some at 1 3/8. Obviously longer equals more weight but they can also be hollowed to...

    The butt makes a difference

I have a nice hitting cue.. Birdseye into ebony 4 pointer. I had an old shaft with a brass 5/16 joint I didn’t like so I plugged it and tapped it for a 3/8-10 screw. The shaft hits the best I’ve ever felt with a nice ping to it. I was finishing another shaft and tried it out on a different butt...

    Anniversary value

Ok guys I know this will be tough without pics or seeing it in person but what would you pay for an anniversary in that’s in excellent shape, well at least as it sits. No scratches or dings...has real wood rails and also has the rectangular Brunswick Balke Collander badge. Any ideas? Thanks mike

    Dyed maple shaft

I bought a nice cue butt that has an aged yellow gold-ish colored Birdseye forearm. I’m going to fit a new shaft to it. The new shaft is very white and does not match the old color of the maple. Is it possible or feasible to use an aniline dye on the shaft to match? Thanks

    Cue butt runout

I’m making my first cue, I did a butterfly splice style with bem into cocobolo. I turned it down and left about 80-100 thousands over size. I left it alone for a month or so and I was going to take the final cuts today and I noticed I have 20- 30 thou runout in the middle of the but after I...

    Cue finishing advice

Gents, I’m making my first cue. I’m almost at the point of finishing it so before I go any further I want to make sure I have this right. First I apply wood sealer, then epoxy sealer and finally the finish coats. Is this correct? Multiple methods on this I’ve read but I just want to keep it...

    Wood glue

Looking for some suggestions on which glue would be best suited for splicing maple and cocobola together. Does the color of the glue matter when joining two colored veneers together?, would it change or bleed in the colors at all? Thanks guys!!

    Poor performance in my matches

Need some advice from the pros and instructors here! Been shooting for 3 years now and also this my 3rd year in the local 8 ball league. Shaft finish

I have a shaft that has some sort of clear coat or some finish like that. It tends to stick in my hands and fingers when shooting especially on a humid day. My players hxt doesn't have this finish and always feels much smoother. My question is how can I remove this finish safely? I'm a machinist...
