Is it necessary to use a soft tip on a Cuetec Cynergy shaft? I read somewhere that only a soft tip should be used due to warranty?

I'm looking at a Wes Hunter cue, and have a question. On the butt plate is HC but under that is 02. Is this the year the cue was made? I don't see the numbers under the makers mark on most of his cues. Thanks in advance.

I've never hit with a all Purpleheart cue (Merry Widow) and assume they offer a hard hit? Can someone enlightening me to how they hit? I realize the shaft has some effect as well.
