    Chicago pool happenings

Or possibly, those that warned me ‘made it up’. Finding bullet holes in your car always makes the news? Maybe in Dogpatch.

    Unsportsmanlike Conduct Rule

He then lags the CB two cushions into the rear of the rack, braking a ball loose, and thus preventing you from leaving him down-table again (more orthodox play).

    Chicago pool happenings

In the early 70s, driving past there on North Ave. (?) was reputedly sometimes risky, as apartment dwellers on the upper floors would take pot shots at distant cars from the balconies.

    Table Light Recommendations

My 8’ fluorescent ‘library’ shop light fixture with 2 LED bulbs still seems adequate, and was fairly cheap. But then, I had low ceiling ductwork issues that limited space.

    Man, pool halls are dangerous

New Years Stupidity: 1970, west side of Chicago, New Years Eve. Around midnight, guy is standing on his front stoop, ushering out party guests, when he feels a strong slap on his upper arm/shoulder. Looks around…no one there. Comes to the ER, with a bullet wound…upper humerus. Arm x-rayed...

Legal shot question for the APA ruleset

If I remember correctly, the BCA rules require a shot be ‘stroked’. Merely lifting the cue might not qualify (?)

    Man, pool halls are dangerous

An acquaintance back in the late 60s (early 20s, very muscular) was shot in the chest at close range with a .25 auto (wearing just a T-shirt). He only spent an hour or two in the ER. Showed me his X-ray later. Bullet was lodged in the chest muscle, just under the skin. If I remember, it was...

‘Penetration’. A likely minor issue compared to ‘hydrostatic shock’, which is probably what initially discourages aggression (universal organ disruption). Of course, when major organs ARE penetrated, perpetrator recovery may be hindered/suppressed (?). But, even when the aorta or cardiac...

    Man, pool halls are dangerous

I still have a stock of 90s era ‘Quick-Shock’ rounds. Big hollow point bullet, large wound cavity/energy dump (hydrostatic shock) and the serrated jacket separates and spreads out to damage various organs also, possibly amplifying disablement.

Questions about the the history of ball in hand

Anytime ‘shoot again’ option is best for ring games. Not sure how that would work for heads-up play though (?). Might simplify the game by doing away with mandatory foul penalties (shoot from the kitchen after scratch), ‘Loss of turn’ foul penalty would then also be optional for non-shooter.

I have a simple/dedicated/no print design pocket holster for the snubby that works well in trad. Levi’s or chinos (stays in the pocket when you pull). Also have a companion Velcro holder in the car’s door-pocket. That crotch-mount version might justify soprano risk though for those at the beach...

    Man, pool halls are dangerous

While I am hesitant to hijack this thread, still, have to input my 2 cents: Autos fired inside a pocket are only strictly reliable for the first round. My ultralight hammerless S&W 38+P only holds 5, but I assume it won’t jam if one round doesn’t do the job (not guilty of ‘brandishing’, for...

Suppressors make concealed carry problematic though. Like choosing the best wine or motor oil, the best pistol model, caliber, & projectile selection involves myriad issues/circumstances, and everyone has his favorite regardless of evidence.

The feds in Miami learned the hard way re: 9mm over-penetration. 357 maybe also. Stopping force wasted.

My .40 Glock surprisingly failed after 4-5 hundred rounds at the range, but it was a metal component. Still, I love its consistent trigger action & higher capacity, so my Commander became history for personal defense. Myths re: 1911 inaccuracy unfortunately prevail. It’s single-action trigger...

    Man, pool halls are dangerous

What galls me. is while acts of violence committed by a nut case or criminal with a gun typically get universal/unending media coverage, incidents where armed citizens successfully defend themselves or others, seldom do. If no one bleeds, the media usually isn’t interested. The most dangerous...

    My New Diamond Professional!

My Pro stayed dead level for over 25 yrs. (concrete slab) until I made the mistake of standing on the slate. Leather pockets never marked the balls either. Good thing I live alone, since I rather enjoy the pinball machine-like ‘crack’ sound when a ball hits the prototype return system. Instead...

    Man, pool halls are dangerous

Where I grew up playing, the greatest danger was from the room manager. He kept a sawed-off baseball bat (center drilled/filled with lead) behind the counter, and very actively encouraged the ‘library’ atmosphere of the place. Which explains my lack of sympathy for those Ecuadorian victims...

dear diary: a 14.1 journey to nowhere

Another one for framing: Sometimes when down on a shot, I get an instinctive sense that I’m looking at an unavoidable scratch or a bank that will kiss. 90% of the time when I ignore that instinct, I live to regret it!

Johnny Carson ask Jackie Gleason if he hustled pool.

Where I grew up, the ‘rack boy’ also held down the cigar store/magazine stand’s front counter/cash register, and thus got a lot of exercise. The shout of “RACK” soon brought him running! He wore a change apron, and the winner of our five & nine ring game would throw him a dime as he racked.
