Russian pyramid on YouTube: 14.1-style game that is more fun than real 14.1 pool!

There are some pyramid cues with 11mm tips, but they are very rare and since snooker is basically unknown in Russia - few players ever tried tips smaller than 13mm. Everybody tells legends about them, but no one tested it :)

Russian pyramid on YouTube: 14.1-style game that is more fun than real 14.1 pool!

This game is called Long pyramid and it uses concept similar to 14.1 pool - rack is respotted when 2 balls are left on the table. Somehow on a pyramid table this works way better than in original straight pool - tight pockets make runs short, every frame features a safety battle when few balls...

As far as I know - there are no equipment standards set for many things in pyramid and cues are one of them. Historically everybody played with exactly 160cm cues and in any cue shop there are only 160cm cues and nothing else. Surprisingly there is a common rule of thumb in pyramid community...

Fun fact is that some people in pyramid community push to use lighter balls which are slightly smaller - by 1mm (1/25 of an inch)! After pros tried to play them - they said "ah, smaller balls, but same pocket - now it's too easy". And that's from going from 4mm (1/6 inch) ball-pocket size...

Planning on posting one of the legendary matches next week. Some of the pros of the past decade put beauty of the game before victory and played way more attacking shots than necessary - one of the best pyramid matches ever. These days it is played more delicately regarding the stance...

Yellow-red-green game is custom and even has no name (yet?) - it was a sponsored match to try it out. New games are always emerging in pyramid community, but few have gotten traction so far. The rules are about points: red - 3 points, green - 2 points, white/yellow - 1 point, white pocketed...

Yeah, it's a pity most cue games don't feature carom scoring. People say it would be too easy with large pockets, but to bring the difficulty back to insane pyramid level we can add a simple rule - you must pocket both OB and CB in one shot to score. Miss any ball and both are respotted.

This must have been a simple coincidence. These are different games - in Free pyramid any ball is a CB, in Combined pyramid - only colored one is CB. Combined is far more popular - played about 80% of times, but both are played by men and women from time to time.

Why current cue games became popular and not the others?

My thought was that if the game is absolutely "fair" then player's rankings would be more consistent and when A playes against B - A will win most of the time even if the skill difference is little, so no one will bet on B, which would mean that you can't make much money on bets and simply it's...

Why current cue games became popular and not the others?

Does anyone has information about why we play 9-ball and not some other games no one heard about? Were there semi-popular alternatives a century ago? I've heard one idea was - because of the gambling, meaning the more people wanted to bet on this particular game - the more popular it became...

Exactly! The slate depth is very important here. There was a hall in Moscow where slate went so deep that no matter what you tried - the ball always got stuck in it (unless the entry angle was ideal). So it always took 2 shots to pocket anything :) After many players complained they sawed off...

14.1 is called Long pyramid or Pyramid with continuation or something like that. It is usually played using Free pyramid rules - any ball can be used as a cue ball, so it offers far more options on every shot. Actually in pyramid players usually count longest runs across multiple innings until...

Corey Deuel plays Russian pyramid (with commentary)!

He played 3 matches total, won this one, but lost others 4:1 to a mid level players. I think they don't award particular rank except for those who got to the finals so in the end listing he was just in lower group who ranked 120-200 (of about 200 total participants). Of his 3 opponents one...

Like pool community has Strickland-Reyes matches - so does pyramid community with Stalev-Palamar back from 2000 I guess. There are numerous interesting matches between these two. I'm planning to post one of these with commentary next week. There are "old legends" who don't play that much these...

Found original video from Kremlin cup 2019 and decided to add some commentary. A very rare occasion where top pool player tries some new cue game. So, let's see how it went and if these pockets are really too tight for a pro! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne7WEH7Sxis

Will do! I guess there will be video with not just with rules comparison, but also with the examples of how small rule changes completely change the pace of the game.
