    Is this a dumb idea

Not a bad idea if you like it. I had mine like that until recently. I put up with it being a bit in the way for the convenience of it. I needed it for checking something away from headstock recently and put it back on the base. Once it was off, I realized it is more versatile and less in the...

Want to start in basic shaft repair.

These are the main ones to look at. They fit on a workbench and are mostly self-contained. I personally have Mid-America lathe and really love it. If you are sure that you will not ever do more than shaft work, a basic tip lathe is fine. If there is a chance you will do any butt work, get one...

    Warped maple??

A nice maple core would do the trick.

    Warped maple??

A good magnet can find these pretty quick. Typically, the old house cues worth converting have a solid butt with un-modified end grain, so these will be safe as well. So far, the only cues I have seen a metal slug in the butt are cheap cues I wouldn't want to convert anyway.

    UltraSkin Cue Tips

Plus since Tom passed, his sister took it over. Maybe a little less personal passion than he had and the holiday took precedence. Idk just guessing.

I just felt the tail stock would be more solid and accurate. having an attachment sticking out of a chuck attachment might have more play and the offset attachment has to be made parallel to bed to be accurate. I'm sure it works, I just like the tailstock better

    UltraSkin Cue Tips

Ordered some a few weeks ago with no problems. Might just be a holiday issue.

Absolutely it’s a PITA, but until I have more space and money, I have to make do with what I have. I would love to have a dedicated tapering station or CNC. Just not at that stage yet.

Yes I have been doing butt and shaft pro tapers this way. I am waiting to see what Cuemakersupply comes up with for a taper bar system. Would like to see a picture when you get it set up. That’s a great deal.

I had thought about one of those but ended up getting a second dedicated tailstock. (Best pics I could find right now)

They do. If you only have the one tail stock with a chuck, you don’t have to mess with it and it can stay centered. I prefer having a separate second tail stock for offsetting.

    Shaft collar issue--

Good point to think about. If you are satisfied with the overall work and he is less experienced it could be just that. He should have requested the butt to check the connection before giving it back to you. It could also need a facing as well. Another problem could be the new insert itself...

USPS Ground Advantage rates increasing in a few weeks

Has nothing to do with that. As a programmer in this business, this happens every year with every shipping service. I have to set up all the new rates, fees, and rules this time every year.

    Solid vs layered tips

Many layered tips are over rated i.e. over priced. IMO Kamui’s glazing issue is commonly complained about. Myself included. I’ve also tried others like Cadien, Emerald, Zan etc. All have played fine. Haven’t had any issues with the glue lines. It’s a micro-thin edge of the glue that gets...

People who use chalk holders...what do you do when

I make a spacer to lift the chalk. I inlay a magnet to keep the chalk secure.

    Offset points or butterfly fix

I have a Rounceville blank I am working on and noticed the points getting off as I was cutting the taper. Their center must be off. I used your method and it worked great. Took me three .003” adjustments to get it to the correct alignment. They are even and I still have 40 thou left till the...

    Gun drill?

Gun drills allow you to bore out a 12" plus dowel for a core. How do you plan on doing it without the gun drill? or are you asking for an actual alternative?
