I know this thread is a bit oldish, but why not a laser? I've always just used a laser level and straight edge to draw, as the laser actually shows on the cloth surface itself (no trying to align from a string above the surface).

Pretty obvious by the pockets, and also on the rails where the balls make contact, balls are a set of 15yr old aramith pros. 860 felt is maybe 2yrs old at this point. Getting ready to recover the table and would like to not have this happen again if possible.
