Hybridizing pool hall with another existing business

A friend is about to open a pool room (his fourth) with a golf simulation room. I think that’s a natural combo. pj chgo

    Drill System

Here’s a comment by Cornerman from a few years ago about a similar drill: “Allen Hopkins’s Q-skills. The first ten balls were open and worth 1 pt each. The last five were in rotation, each being 2 pts. So max 20 per frame, ten frames. Mike’s flip option made for an advancement of the game.” pj...

    Drill System

Sounds a lot like FARGO (Flip and Run, Guts Offense), a practice game invented by MIke Page. Smash break a full rack, take ball in hand (or not), and shoot any ball (like straight pool) until you get to a point where you think you can run the rest in rotation - then try that. I think you get 1...

    think I need deflection

Does "same way" mean "same stroke speed"? With soft vs. hard tips that would produce different CB speeds and therefore different amounts of swerve for many shots. The tip's only contribution is the speed difference. However you see it, it's working for you, so this is just academic...

    think I need deflection

Are you saying the "net effects of the applied spin" at the same CB speed are different if the speed is produced by the tip vs. the stroke? I think the effects are the same both ways. pj chgo

    think I need deflection

The only reason I can think of for that is that a hard tip might move the CB slightly faster with the same stroke - so a softer tip might make you stroke a little more slowly for the same outcome. In other words, it's the speed, not the tip - and the difference is probably too small to notice...

    Question about tip shape...

If you hit off enter with the edge of your tip it doesn’t matter what you were trying to do. pj chgo

    Question about tip shape...

Unless you hit on the tip's edge - that's what tip curvature is supposed to prevent. pj chgo

    Question about tip shape...

P.S. I wonder if this is why snooker players like mushroomed tips... makes 'em a little wider to hold a bit more curve? pj chgo

    Question about tip shape...

The basic principle is that the tip’s surface must be parallel with the CB’s surface in order to make good non-slip contact. For that the tip must have a curved surface with an arc equal in degrees to the arc of the CB’s surface between its left and right miscue limits - i.e., at least 60...

    think I need deflection

On the other hand... With a good tip, only three cue specs matter to me: low squirt, small tip and stiff hit. I got those 30-some years ago in a custom maple shaft ($150 by Ed Young) which I still screw onto an old Joss butt. Any other butt about the same weight would do too. pj <- gear...

    Cte finally explained?

Starting with a CTE line-up makes sense - it's the center alignment for all shots and easily seen; a good starting place. I don't do it, but I get it. pj chgo
