    Canvas Based Phenolic is stringier looking and better for ferrule tip combos as it seems to hold up better and holds chalk better. Linen Based Phenolic has the sheet/cloth looking pattern and looks nicer for ferrules, butt plates and rings.

    The 80's and early 90's Micarta was the paper based stuff. It smelled horrible when turning. I suspect asbestos being used and that being why they quietly went away along with fiber ferrules. But that is just a guess.

    Ask for a real shiny, glossy, lustrous finish and see if they think they can do it. Super glue, Epoxy, UV and Auto clears can all do it if done correctly.
