Was pool better 50 years ago?

Helluva thread, fun to read. It’s not unlike the stance my father took WRT Major League Baseball. The pitchers were better. The hitters were better. Joe D was the best baseball player ever. It’s a debate no one can ever win because we’re opining based on nostalgia and our rose-colored time...

2026 AZ Billiards Straight Pool Challenge!

Sort of embarrassed to even post this but 18 on New Year’s Day (video available if anyone is dying to see it). Missed an easy ball frozen to the rail. Ugh. 9’ Goldenwest on 860. Really out of date FR 430 (RB 197; haven’t played in a league that reports to Fargo in 15 months.) I often get to...

    New Years Resolution

Really too bad you can’t (won’t) create a YouTube account, take a video with your phone of you breaking, say, 10 or 20 times, uploading to YT, and posting a link here. Less desirable but still helpful would be to take photos of 10 or 20 post-break layouts and post them. Then we can either...

Funny Things Said to You at the Pool Room

(I've shared this here before so apologies if you've seen it before.) A (large) number of years ago I was playing a friend at a nearby hall. Next to us was a couple of very early-twenty-somethings. They were having a great time, drinking beer, playing casually, really cutting each other up...

    Double the Distance Aiming ???

I tried the DTD method. It seems to work at least most of the time. I missed a bunch of shots, though, before I started to get it right, especially as the cuts became more severe. That said, since I have little trouble visualizing the ghost ball, I have a much better time (and shorter time!)...

Ever want to use a product but you just can't

Yes, I know, resurrecting an old thread. 😁 I use this. “Stick” goes in your pocket, the chalk hangs outside your pocket. And yes, the flexible square DOES reliably hold a round Taom V10. Funny: I tried a rare earth magnet attached to my belt, with an iron washer glued to my chalk. Every...

    Funny pic/gif thread...

Anyone know why I cannot play any of the videos posted here with links to IG? All I get is a still pic… (No, I don’t have an INSTAGRAM account.)

    New Years Resolution

Can anyone explain the physics or reasons a certain type of table inherently yields consistently un-runnable layouts? Explain it to me as if I’m as dumb as I actually am.

People who use chalk holders...what do you do when

I use round Taom V10 and keep it in a standard square holder. It doesn’t fall out. As it wears down I put some paper towel under it to bring it level to the holder surface. Coins were too heavy and caused the chalk to fall out. Not rocket science.

What's your favorite pool memory from 2025?

Non-playing, went to the Florida Open to see pros in person. While there, I had the privilege of meeting Stu @sjm and chatting with him for a while. Playing, getting my @$$ kicked so embarrassingly and thoroughly it served as a wakeup call to GTFO my head once down on the shot and to quit...

The what did you get pool related for christmas 2025 thread

Wife and I bought dog toys for our pups, and an ashtray cupholder and seat covers for our Honda ACTY Kei truck. Pool-related I gave myself the gift of taking something away: removing control of my shots. I have worked on relinquishing control of my stroke to my subconscious. Finished third, $...

Any tips for not changing your grip pressure on the shot.

Doesn’t that predispose you to squeezing the cue even more? Do you use the pre-squeeze as a reminder not to?

Advantages or Disadvantages does it make a difference Stepping into the shot vs. stepping back from the shot?

I love reading your posts but I’ll be damned if I understand more than a couple of % of them.

First time on brand new Diamonds with new Simonis. Not my first time on Diamonds.

    Diamonds!!

Diamonds! Our league hall got four new 7-ft Diamonds and last night I played on them for the first time. New Simonis. Wow, really unpredictable. I overran some shots and came up short others. I don't know if it was because of new cloth, but I swear the balls rolled differently depending on...

Mosconi Cup 2025, Dec. 3-6, Alexandra Palace, London

Would there be any benefit to selecting reasonably strong, but not super high strong, MC rookies who can catch a gear occasionally but statistically not be expected to win? Perhaps with very low expectations, they might not feel pressure the same way the top players feel, and might perform well...

    107 Breaks & 6 Chances

I have read through this thread once. I don't remember whether anyone has, or even I have, responded thusly: - How many different breaks have you tried? - Have you tried a particular CB position, tried 10 in a row, verifying you have hit the CB in the same exact spot each time? Verified you...

Mosconi Cup 2025, Dec. 3-6, Alexandra Palace, London

FWIW, here's my take, from a lowly "C" player (most if not all of it stating the painfully obvious): - The game requires dedication and practice. Performing at a very high level requires the knowledge of what to shoot, and how to shoot it. But it's a small part of the picture. - On the...

Mosconi Cup 2025, Dec. 3-6, Alexandra Palace, London

Watching replays on YouTube. I FRIGGING HATE THE PNK 4 AND THE PURPLE 5!!!!!!!!!!!! So many racks I am looking at the wrong ball after the 3. And at one point JJ even said “…to get down table to the four.” Then, clarifies (implicit that it actually needs clarification) with “…the PURPLE...
