    That cue back then was about $700. A lot of money, then. Joss West cues cost more than most other top builders. Certainly more than Schon. Many early Schons were copies of Bill's cues, at much less cost.

    The way I heard the story, he sold his cue to multiple people, played the tournament, pretended to lose his temper and snapped the cue in front of everybody.

    In the late '70's I had the opportunity to buy an ebony box cue from Bill Stroud, in person, for $400. FOUR HUNDRED FREAKIN' DOLLARS!! Big mistake. HUGE!

    I stretched over a table to reach a shot, kept 1 foot on the floor. When I swung my back leg off the table, it got hung up on the rail, I stumbled and broke my toe.

    One playing cue, 1 or 2 shafts. Borrow a break or jumper on site. I let others carry the heavy cases.

    I looked at Joss cues at the Derby. They have a synthetic ivory material that will fool anybody.

    Okay, how so you count rings?

    Not sure what you are looking for. To age the tree it came from you need a cross-section of the trunk. If you are looking for wood density, you can weight the shaft, compared to shafts with the same joint hardware and length. Or look for a tighter grain.
