Richard made this cue for me in 1973 while I was going to the University of Houston. At that time, his shop was located in his garage in a Houston suburb. The cue is constructed from bird’s eye maple and ebony with ivory dots. If you look closely in the 4th image, you will see a purple hue in the outside veneer (Szambotti Prong) indicating that the cue’s forearm was supplied by Gus Szambotti. This was first noticed by Joe Van on this forum.

There are 4 points that are extremely even and proportional. The joint is stainless and there is a single shaft that is approximately 12mm. The linen wrap is black with silver specs. The cue is beautiful and in good condition. It has seen many hours of use over the last 40+ years and has a couple of minor flaws. I have been told by many that this is one of the best hitting Blacks that they have ever seen.

This cue may be of interest to collectors but will more likely be of interest to someone that wants a daily player with a pedigree and historical value. After all, there are not many 40+ year old Blacks out there with Gus Prong. I am including an It’s George 1x1 case that is in very good condition. The cue has lived in this case for many years.

I have been asked a couple of times already if Richard signed the cue. He did not. He was apparently not doing that in his early days. He must have felt that he was not particularly famous then. Richard has provided me a LOA for this cue confirming that it is a genuine Richard Black and that he used a Szamboti blank when he made it. - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8843085/Brad Fountain.doc

The inner veneer in the 4th picture down doesn't look like Gus's work. JMO!

I am no cue expert. My claim that it is a Szam Forearm is based on the comments that Joe Van made from pics of the same cue pictured above in this thread from 2013: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=4397621#post4397621. I didn't even know what a Gus Prong was at the time.

All I know is that Joe is considered an expert of collectible cues and that he is well respected. Additionally, there is no doubt that the outside veneer on the points on this forearm are indeed purple and that the cue was built for me in 73 or 74 at the latest (my memory is not that great) by Richard Black.

UPDATE 2/17/16:

FWIW, please see the link below for a Letter of Authenticity and confirmation of Szamboti blank from Richard Black.

I emailed Richard Black yesterday and included the same photos that appear in my for sale listing. He replied and included a letter confirming the fact that he made the cue and that it was made with a Szamboti blank. He also states in the letter that he thinks he made it in 1977. I still stand by the fact that it was 1973 or 1974 because I left Houston in 1976.

I sent you a PM inquiring about if you would be willing to use a escrow service for the cue. Please respond.
