Hey Guys,

Currently i am playing in a 14.1 League out of Raxx along with Charlie (Forumghost516) run by Holden Chin. He runs a very smooth and Tight league....Kudos to him !!! here's his room: http://raxxpoolroom.com/ if you're ever in NY i highly suggest you check out his amazing room.

Both Charlie and I are handicapped high, and we both agree that you cant play your normal type game with the spots that we have to give out. in some matches we are giving out 50,60,70+ points. It's crazy !!!

But what we are learning is that Defense is a very big part of the game, taking shots with risk are not always an option. You have to learn your opponent very quick, knowing how he plays is important in knowing how you can play him defensively so you can get back to the table with good options.

Just thought i would share this, as i prepare myself for league play tonight.

Currently we are both in the mix of an 11 way tie for 5th place, and we are both vying for a playoff position. Things are getting real tight !!!

Wish us luck !

Thumbs Up

Good Luck with your match this evening. Let us know how it turns out. Really great looking room & tables. Wish that we had something like that down here. Looks like you have a good thing going on with that 14.1 league.
Stay with it.

Good luck. Interested to hear how you handicap the league. Years ago in the Atlanta area, there was a pretty good league that played 14.1. Probably had 40 or more players. Handicaps ran from A to E.

If I recall it went something like A to 150, B to 125, C - 110, D - 90, E - 70.

It was a lot of fun, and handicaps were adjusted. There were some mid ranges added as well (B+ for example if warranted). Was a great opportunity for lower ranked players to learn from some good straight pool players.

Wish there was a good league around .....

Very interesting. I am always interested in other leagues scoring systems. Thanks for sharing.

I'm pretty happy with the way I've been playing lately (knock on wood) I have been playing in both the Sunday at Raxx and Monday at Amsterdam and trying to practice through out the week. My goal although I know pretty crazy is to win both leagues. I have to say that between Holden and Danny the two of them run some great leagues.

I visited the website, am I seeing things or is that an actual tournament room with grandstand seating on both sides with a runway down the middle, separating two rows of 8 tables each? If so, wow!!

I think your seeing things...there is no tournament room with bleacher seating !!!

would be cool though.

back in the day there was a room out in Deer Park, NY owned by KC that had the tourney room with Bleachers which was awesome.

I believe the picture you are referring to is from the Turning Stone Casino where the Joss Tour runs a couple events each year. It is an awesome venue and Joss runs one of the best events I've ever attended.

Steve, can you give us any information about how the handicapping is done in your straight pool leagues? Is there a definite system or is it up to the discretion of the league operators?

I will have to talk to Holden about it, I am not sure how he does the breakdown.

This I do know, that all players record their matches on paper. Logging innings of balls made, missed shots and safeties.

I will talk to him about it when I see h next, and hopefully he gives me the permission to share his recipe. It really is a great and very fair handicapping system, with the exception of very few that are probably spotted too low.

Thanks Steve. I would appreciate anything you can make public.
In my league, the handicapping is up to the LO and, of course, that leads to a lot of disagreements. I've been looking for a set system to submit to the LO but I've been unsuccessful so far.

Hi Rich and everyone else,

I run 14an1.com "America's Straight Pool League". Check out the site. This is a very good handicap system. Most leagues end up with very close matches towards the end of the session (with the exception of the occasional blow-out!)

I'm working to try and unify the straight pool leagues across the country. Currently I have 14 sanctioned leagues (yeah, I know there are several out there that are using the system but not paying the sanctioning fee). We will have our 14and1.com National Tournament at Red Shoes Billiards, in Alsip, IL just outside of Chicago, September 15. We have been around since 2008.

Players like the handicap/scoring system. League operators like the local control. And the top two from each league session receive an invitation to the 14and1.com National Tournament.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to travel across the country and be able to play someone else knowing you are using the same handicapping system? Sure there will be some local variances but all-in-all the system puts players real close to each other's abilities.

Hoping you hit'em where you want'em to go!

Andy, I have seen your web site before and it is a great idea. Unfortunately, our league is very small and I believe most of the people involved are only interested in a fun, cash, league. In fact, it is mostly for fun and there is only enough cash to make it interesting. I doubt most of them are interested in going to a national tournament anywhere.

The room has NO alcohol and a minimum of food. As you can imagine, profits are small and any league sanctioning fee would put the league in danger.

On my own, I have just been looking for a set system for handicapping a straight pool league. I'm mostly looking for the system for my own knowledge but I would certainly give it to the RO if I found a good one. I'm not even sure if he would choose to use a set system or not.

Rich...I do the stats for 14.1 leagues in MN. We use a system from a Billiards Digest article by Bob Jewett called "Handicapping 14.1". In summary...the LO assigns a rating to each player based on skill level. One players rating is subtracted from the others and result is the "rating differance". Depending on the length of race, the "ball spot" to the lower rated player is taken off published charts. If a player wins, his rating increases by set amount. If player loses his rating decreases by set amount. The system works well for us, we use MS excel to generate weekly standings from individual records. One improvement I have been working on is adjust ratings by calculating win/loss differentials per game multiplied by set percentage.

If you would like I can send you via email the .xlsx file of our system.

Thanks Dennis but I don't know if this would work for us. The RO isn't too computer savy and I don't know for sure but I don't think he knows excel. Frankly, I don't know excel either and I couldn't help him with it. I guess we're a sad bunch when it comes to computers. LOL
Anyway, thanks for the offer.
