My New Case.....that I made......

Hard to say what I would do without it in front of me.

Gotta see what is repairable or what needs replaced.

The foam can't be seen in my case, it's covered with a thick "fur" fabric.

Can you buy the foam? Absolutely. There is closed cell and open cell.

Open cell foam is the familiar traditional "foam rubber". Very soft, cuts pretty clean with an electric knife like you use for carving a turkey.

Closed cell foam is firm. It's what was originally seen in the endoscope cases I posted. It looks very "clean" when cut out. It's often used in gun cases to cut out a space for a gun.

Good foam can be pricey if you are not buying in quantity.

The Halliburton cases are nice, obviously. You can just re-glue foam that comes apart. Some foams get pretty crumbly with age and need replaced. I believe those cases are lined with open cell foam.

I tend to favor closed cell foam...and it is more expensive.

There are articles and videos on cutting foam. Google is your friend. :)

Foam can be cut with a knife, razor, power knife (turkey carving knife), laser, it can be routed, machined, carved, and more. Depends on the foam and what you are trying to do with it. Bigger operations use CNC but you can do great with basic tools at home.

Straight cuts are easiest. The more complex the cut, the harder it is to do neatly.

There are two "quickie" ways to deal with foam lining a case for guns, pool cues, or whatever.

1. "Egg crate foam. https://www.pooldawg.com/product/action-3-butt-4-shaft-box-case

2. Perforated foam. Some call "pick and pluck". https://www.thefoamfactory.com/blog...ers-simple-and-secure-diy-packaging-solutions https://www.reddit.com/r/KingdomDeath/comments/3rxj5y/using_pluck_foam_for_storing_miniatures/

There are many ways to skin this cat. Here is an example of a beautiful case...but I don't like the interior:

I am kind of half way between where JB is with his Ultrapad linings and where we see a lot of other cases. I don't want my cues to rattle around, but I don't want them squeezed either.

A case can be custom fit to the cue: http://www.tampabilliards.com/images/huebclg.jpg

That's what I would call a "presentation" case. Not practical for carrying, but obviously impressive, secure for storage, and an absolutely complimentary work of art for a fine cue.

I think Longoni cases are really very practical: https://store.kozoom.com/media/cata...goni-transporter-billiard-cue-case-zoom-2.jpg

Your Rambow cues deserve a good home, so I appreciate that you want to put some thought into this.

If you want "bullet proof", road and airline worthy, nobody does better than Dishaw IMHO: http://www.dishawcues.com/cases.htm

I have an ATA case from a keyboard that is just like his 8x16 that I am planning to put my own interior in...better than what Dishaw does IMHO, at least prettier.

What do I currently carry to the pool hall? https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-xiVnmbvF2AM/UE0DA2jtPDI/AAAAAAAAAks/NY0szFJi2aQ/s720/IMG_0774.JPG

It's a 3x6 Bentley.

This is currently my largest cue case: https://forums.azbilliards.com/picture.php?albumid=2182&pictureid=16471

I never thought about just gluing to old foam back in.
A couple of the shaft slots were already crudely cut-out for longer shafts when I got
the 3x5, and it's not pristine anyway.
Especially with the fragile stickers the guy at the airport slapped on it when I
checked in one time.

I didn't even think about needing those cases back out of storage when this
Rambow project is completed.
In fact I forgot about the Halliburton's until I read this thread tonight, and even
worried about what case I'm going to use when I get the Rambow's back.
Quite a project and I feel better about the case situation, although it looks a little
weird carrying that big honking case into the pool hall.
Incredible how long those things are

I think the 4x8 just needs the Velco straps glued back in.
Maybe I'll pick up some fast & medium drying cyan from West Systems.
Medium for the foam and fast for the straps.

Thanks for the info and the articulate recommendations.
I'll grab them this weekend and evaluate everything.
Glad I didn't sell them, and if it wasn't for the massive box required and subsequent
cost of shipping they would be gone.

Peace

Cool. Haul it out. Fix it up. You'll do great. It ain't rocket science. Just get past the initial hesitation. If you want to discuss it you can feel free to contact me.

And of course...we'll anticipate pics of the cues.:thumbup::thumbup:

You would not believe how bad I can pork things up.
In fact, if it's any more that smearing some glue onto a large surface area I will delegate it to others.
Just had to take two cases to my little cobbler girl to fix some of my handywork.
She recently fixed one of my screw-ups, did a fantastic job, charged me 15-bucks and I gave her 20.
Probably a 75-dollar job at a specialty leather shop.
She even found a nick at the top and fixed that as well.
A 3x6 Swift she is repairing wasn't my fault, he used crappy plastic zippers
requested by the guy who ordered the case, but the 1x2 George case was one of
the dumbest things I've ever done.
The slides on the zippers failed immediately.
Those may be ready today, if not she is out till after the 8th.

On the 3x6 Swift, I need to get 9-satin socks make for the tubes.
The white PVC tubes are rough at the edges and cuts through the satin liners.
The case looks to be an attempt to make a Pro-lite.
Only used for storage over the years and you can see the white PVC tubes under the black satin.
I can do that work if I can get the socks made.

If you reline those tubes take some sandpaper and finish the sharp edges on the tubes. The next liner will last longer.
