Cushion Facings

I just got a hold of a Sports King Table and am fixing to replace the cloth.
I am assuming it still has the original Monarch Cushions.

Question: Can I use 1/4 " Cushion Facings to minimize the gap of the
corner pockets by 1/2 inch by gluing or stapling them to ends
of the cushions and then covering them when installing the
felt?
Thanks,
Ben

Are you talking about adding them to the facings already on the ends of the rails? if that be the case, that's no different than triple facing the pockets, yes it'll tighten up the pockets...but do nothing to correct the pocket miter angles or keep the pockets lively;)

At this point , I am trying to refinish the panels,legs,etc..and have not
taken the cloth off the rails yet. So, I have no idea what the rails look like.

I just wanted to know if it was possible and also, what the pros and cons
were in doing this.
Do you think I should replace the (Monarch rails)?

Thanks,
Ben:wink:

You can't just replace the Monarch cushions with todays K55 profile cushions...not without updating the sub-rails first...they won't fit right otherwise;)

Cushion Facing

Glenn,

You sort of answered part of my question that I am about to ask in your
reply to Luke's stevenson's pool table.

Would I be correct in saying that as a general rule on most antique tables
say 50 yrs old and older to replace the rubber on them the sub rails need
to be modified?
On my table you mentioned k55 rubber would be used. MY rails are 1 3/4 in.
thick. Can k66 be used as well ? Also, in modifying the sub rails are we
changing the profile (angle) or what?

Thanks for your reply,
Ben

K66 cushions don't really play well on sub-rails thicker than 1 5/8" thick, that's where the K55's start to perform their best, up to 1 11/16" so to answer you question, yes...if the rails are going to play at their best the sub-rails need to be calibrated for thickness, and bevel that fits the cushions the best. Where the backend of the cushion is in terms of sub-rail thickness, is just as important as the nose height of the cushions. The rule of 63.5% of the ball height + or - 1% applies to 1 11/16" thick sub-rails using K55 profile cushions....not 1 5/8" or 1 1/2" thick sub-rails using K66 cushions....example: with a set of rails with 1 1/2" thick sub-rails, using K66 cushions, the table plays it's best if the nose height is set at 1 5/16" if there's a cloth relief on the bottom of the rails, if no cloth relief is there....meaning the bottom of the rails are flat, then the nose height should be set at 1 1/4" because when the cloth is installed on the rails, the cloth added to the bottom of the rails will lift the nose height up the the right position to play right. Try putting the nose height on a 1 11/16" sub-rail set at 1 5/16" with any cushions and see what happens:D

Appreciate you giving us a thorough explanation on this subject.
It was very interesting and informative to say the least.
Thanks Again,
Ben
