what I have recently learned

$400 will not get you too far.

If you want a nice lathe for doing shaft cleaning, retapering by sanding, ferrule replacement and tips I have something nice I built with a Taig compound slide on a tool post that slides and clamps along the frame. Mounted on a 6 x 40 inch board, frame is 8020 one inch square aluminum, with an adjustible speed motor and steady rests. You would have $200 left over for yourself too! Please PM me, you will like this deal alot I think.

The basic Taig 15 inch bed, motor, toolcarriage and is $400. But you can't work on shafts with it because it is too short of a bed, with ony 8 inches of room to work, it's made for machining little aluminum parts and that.

The bore on the standard Taig head stock is tiny (like 8 mm) so you need to upgrade to the $70 H100-06 headstock with the 0.59" bore 915mm), but then you need a $10 pully to fit the wided shaft on the spindle. A bigger bore headstock to fit a cue butt is $400 by itself (no a thing more). Oh and you still need a longer bed to work on the shafts.
A 36 inch bed could run $200 and they only come from the cue lathe makers (or whoever makes them), Taig doesn't sell them.

So yes a basic taig microlathe, is $400, bigger headstock and pully $80, longer bed $200= $680 new, no steady rests. Repair lathes sell very fast , and usually close to retail. They come up very infrequently.

The 700 setup above barely gets you in the door, there is so much more to spend money on. I know because after built the shaft and tip lathe mentioned first for just about $250 , I started to build a more substantial lathe with a 1.35" headstock, bigger steady rests , longer bed and even assembling it myself with some used asttachments it is going to be right under $1000 the way I want it.

This is why the cue lathe makers get and deserve the $1200-1500 for the lathes they sell that are "midsize". A entry level cue building lath with tapering attachments is 3K.

Send me you info by PM or leave a note here and I will give you first crack at the Taig shaft lathe with compound slide, it can send the cutting tool in any angle for a few inches of travel along, across or at an angle of the tip of the cue.

I think you can get the larger headstock ,bed and carriage for about 160-170 from cartertools ,still need a chuck 70.00
you can pick up 1/2 horse dc motor and controller with pulleys 100.00
1/3 hp dc motor and controller 65.00
For a couple hundred the lathe cueporn built seems nice, how bout a pic

Shaft lathe

Well here it is, nothing special, but it's effective and affordable. The Taig compound slide is mounded to an 8020 aluminum carriage. The carriage attaches to a 3 sided bracket with slotted Derlin slides on the sides and top. It locks down with the wing nuts using a carriage bolt in the middle of the slide. The steady rest also has Derlin slides under the L channel frame. The both lock down snugly and with only a turn they loosen and slide along the frame.

Here it is, nothing too special, butit gets the job done for shaft and ferrule work. Comes with a small motor, stong enought to spin the shaft for tip fork, ferrule replacement and cleaning. It has a variable speed control switch. At full speed the motor is a bit much, the speed controler allows precise control. It has an adjustible 3/8 inch chuck, enough to hold the lathe pins. Comes with 3 lathe pins 3/8 x 10, 5/16 x 14 and 5/ 16 x 18, they sell for $30. The compound slide tightens don on the mount with a T nut type mechanism that is held with a small allen bolt. That is tightened underneath the slide with the small allen wrench that is included. Also included is an allen wrench that fits most all of the T nuts in the 8020 frame and also the 1/4 bit tool holder. It is mounted on a 40 by 6 inch piece of MDF board that has 2 female theaded pieces on the underside of the board through which 1/4 x 20 bolts can be used under the work surface to secure the bed firmly.

Yes, I have way to much time apparently. I am selling it for $180 delivered. The original posted here gets first chance at it. I'll put it on Ebay if nobody wants is, I understand you guys have a whole lot more than this little fella in the shop:grin:, but it will do a lot mire than a $440 Willard Tipper can.

Not cool

Cueporn you really should learn how sales are done here. Stouter started this post looking for a lathe, You added to the post with what you had for sale. I contacted you and asked for pictures, You sent them I looked at them and replyed to you I'm very interested but just have one simple question first. You said the original poster had till mid day to reply then It was up for grabs. I sent you a PM with the simple question I had for you about the pictures you sent me. You never answered my PM or question and you sold it to a different person. No Disrespect to Dale here (pdcues) as we are friends. Just thought you should have finished Business with me before you went to the next person... Thanks for nothing I guess, People here like to do business with people who do what they say and say what they do... Welcome to AZ, Good luck making friends doing things that way.

Hey you can always upgrade... so much for it being a cost efficient solution to shaft care right.
I plan on making several mre like this, with some changes along the way. I just bought a bunch of 8020 to do it so here we go.

Sir, I did wait until noon for Stouter and still have not heard back from him. Last evening I sent photos and description of the shaft lathe to 4 other posters, telling everyone the window to buy would open precisely at noon. PD cue messaged me before 1 pm to say he would take it.

I have held things for people before, but alwaays do so for just a short time. Otherwise I may miss a buyer because I told them it was taken. Generally, when selling, I operate with the window wide open and on a first paid, first seved basis.

I will PM you when I build more, I have enough 8020 coming to make several. I am sorry for the confusion, I know how hard it is communicating by PM amd texts. I meant no disrespect.

What size 8020 are you using 1010 and 1020.
I have dealt with 8020 garage sale before and you cant be making any money building this.
The two linear bearings under the compound slide are probably 35.00 each. The extrusions are cheap but not that cheap

Good points - I am sure porn is capable of answering for himself, but
my impression is he wnated to off load this unit because he is building
a bigger, better, sexier, lathe he can BUILD an entire cue with.

Poor fellow, we all know where that road leads, don't we:)

Chuck it is 10 series 1 inch wide.

Yes it's true I lost a few bucks on this one. It's okay though, karma has really been good to me today. On the garage sale the 3 sided slide bracket with the mounting tab are $7, the derlin inserts with screws are abour $2 each. Yes the brackets and tubing are pricey.

I did just get a ton of it though from a member here at a great price and will be making a few more of these after my cuebuilding lathe is built.

I'm pretty sure this new lathe will be the absolute nutz. A big collaboration of the best that is available. It will be a few weeks yet, but I will post here when it's purring.
