1 inch or half inch ferrule?

i've played with a lot of cues in my day and i've come to realize a big difference in ferrule length. i have noticed that the shorter the ferrule , the better the hit. whether it be a shooting cue or jump cue, the ones that have the half inch ferrules have the better hit and better jump than the longer ferrules. i just want to know if anyone has an opinion on this? or if someone can tell me why this is the case? has anyone else noticed this? if not, then you should try it. thanks:)

I definitely agree which is why I order all my cues with either 3/4 or 1/2" ferrules. I recently had a 1" Ivory ferrule that had the most deflection I have ever seen.

Yes, I have noticed my Jump Cues with the shorter Ferrule Jump better.
And my shooting cues that have longer Ferrules are more accurate on Long shots.:)

i wonder why that is though. i have yet to find anyone that can tell me why. there has to be an explanation, right?

Very interesting. It's hard not to notice a lot of the low deflection shafts have short ferrules. It must help in reducing end weight of the shaft, but I think it does look ugly.
I hadn't thought about ordering my custom with a short ferrule, or more exactly I hadn't thought of the length of the ferrule being one of the options I have with a custom. Maybe for the next one I'll try it on a second shaft.

Hear say--

I do not vouch for the validity of this but I have heard that the mass at the tip of your cue has the biggest impact on "squirt" or "deflection" or whatever you wish to call it. Theoretically if you reduce the mass in the ferrule - you reduce deflection.

Supposedly this is why Predator cores the ferrule end of the shaft.

Also, if you have noticed, Predator 2 shafts are coming w/ a 1/2 inch ferrule as opposed to the former 3/4 inch.

OB-1 shafts use the wood ferrule to reduce mass.

i recently ordered a custom gracie with 2 shafts and a gracie jump, and they all have half inch ferrules on them. i will post pictures when they arrive next week.

The anticipation is killing me.

Yea, I'm quite convinced that a short ferrule produces less squirt (deflection). The ferrule on my main cue is just 8mm, (the tip is 12mm) and it actually took me some time to get used to its very low squirt.

Some people, e.g., Bob Jewett, use no ferrule at all. I believe Bob does use a fiber pad under his tip. This apparently works just fine for him.

The cues I got Ron Kilby to build for me have only a 1/8-inch pad of ferrule material under the tip (Ron says his normal ferrule material has the same density as wood, so it makes no difference in shaft end mass). These shafts have a conical taper from joint to tip, and the tip width is 10mm. I have had no problem with these shafts at all, and squirt is very low.

Now that I've gotten used to having only a very thin white line at the tip, I think that looks a whole lot better than having a big, klutzy white blob hanging out there :)

I agree, big ferrules belong on K-Mart cues.

I had a Jim Buss cue that probably had less deflection than any predator or squirt shaft that I have ever shot with. Maybe I should give him a call and tell him to start stocking his cues at K-mart.

I have never seen or heard of a Jim Buss Cue, how long a Ferulle does he use?
My Wayne Gunn shafts and Sneaky Pete all have long Ferulles and they shoot great.

Look at the shaft second from the top.

Sheldon Lebow, who is a terrific cuemaker and very bright guy, plays with one of his SP cues, with no ferrule. I thnk he uses a graphite pad under the tip.

In any case, it's become widely accepted that reducing tip area mass decreases deflection (squirt).
