#1 Myth in Pool

i wonder if pt109 will see this thread. i am keeping an eye open for him to appear.

I played without glasses for the longest time and felt I was doing fine. Once I finally played with glasses, I couldn't make the longer shots where I was looking over the rim, but for those that I was looking through my glasses? Amazing how much more accurate I became. Not just the potting, but moreso the shape - hitting the exact spot I want instead of close to it made a world of difference. I got laser surgery a few months ago and even better now - no worries about looking over the rim on the long shots :)

All that to say - yes, deteriorating eyesight will most definitely impact one's ability at a certain level.
I was going to say almost the same thing. I didn't know how bad I was seeing till I began using my glasses. Next was to get special glasses made. I got them and I was young again.

So how bad is your uncorrected vision?

What if you had a long shot where you had to discern whether the CB has a clear path past blocking balls? Would you rather shoot that shot without glasses? Yeah, I wouldn’t either….

I feel like if a ball is within about 4 feet I can hit it accurately enough. Further than that and it's a coin toss. I'm not sure if it's eyesight, deflection, or both. The longer the shot, the more my odds go down. I find myself wishing for binoculars sometimes.

... One thing I have read, if you wear glasses it takes thirty minutes or so for your eyes to adjust to not wearing them. Eyesight varies so much with individuals that it is hard to say what is true for another person. ...

Yep. I have 3 different prescriptions in identical frames. Distance, pool and reading.

I'd drive to play pool with my distance glasses and then put my pool glasses on to play. Would disorient me for 30+ min. and give me a headache.

One day I mistakenly drove to play pool with my pool glasses. The words on the road signs were a little blurry, but I could read them just fine. Was good to go when I started playing pool.

So, I started wearing my pool glasses all the time and now my only distance glasses are dark with polarization (that I primarily use for driving or boating). For my old pool glasses, I was given a choice of max. focal length of 12' or 18'. I chose 18' since I play snooker on a 12' table and wanted to see the table from sitting in the chair.

This works great for me especially since a lot of the time I'm indoors and I can see fine outdoors. So, I now drive all the time with my pool glasses (unless I'm facing the sun or a lot of glare).

Surprisingly, when I went to the DMV to renew my driver's license, I could see the vision charts even better with my pool glasses than my distance glasses (I assume since the vision charts were projected on the wall 10' behind the person serving me). And, with my pool glasses I can read the instrument panel when I am driving whereas with my distance glasses I can't.

Note: During my last eye exam for a prescription, my optometrist measured the length from my eyes to the cue ball and somehow adjusted my old 18' pool prescription so I could see the cue ball better. Said she was blending the art of her profession with the science.

Whether it's eyes, arthritis, a bad leg, stress from a divorce, a bad nights sleep, a cold, a toothache or WHATEVER, I find that most of us are MUCH better at making excuses than we are at overcoming our challenges with practice, lessons and hard work at the table. I know it's true of me! :-)
