After reading WillieBetMore's post on Danny D's lessons i had a bit of an idea. Everone here is a witness that this is MY idea, incase someone tries to steal it.

As we played about 10 or 12 hours of straight pool, he would continuously analyze every shot (his and mine), explaining the WHY of every shot. Why he selects it, why he hits it a certain speed, what position he hopes to obtain, what part of the pocket to aim at, what safety features can be built into any shot, where to find the hidden English in combo-caroms, how to minimize your risk with every pattern that you choose, how to find the hidden carom/billiard/combo's that most players don't see, how to find the relatively easy "split shots" and unusual billiards that most players don't know (but will often save your run), why to hit each break shot with its own proper speed, why it is important to play intentional scratches in certain situations (and know what EXACTLY you hope to accomplish with these intentional scratches).

What if somebody made a video series exactly like this? My name for the 9-ball series would be '10 racks with 'Insert Pro Name here.' Basicly they would just break the rack, and start running balls, except on every shot explain the What, Where, And why. Instead of just doing 10 racks though, maybe do 20 or 30, and select the best 10. The best 10 doesn't mean he broke and ran those racks, its the best 10 for instructional purposes. The ones with unique shots, or shots that you might not see all the reasons for playing. IE Shape, trouble balls, rolling into the line of the shot etc... You could do a straight pool series too. 150 balls with Grady Matthews. You could really get a better understanding of what is going through the pros heads. I know that i would buy '10 Racks with Efren Reyes', '10 Racks with Johnny Archer', and maybe splurge with '100 balls with Danny DeLiberto.' Anyone else wanna buy these Tapes/DVD's?

It's a good idea, and I would buy 'em..................are they done yet?
No? Well get on top of it man!

lol.......i just posted something like this last week. although my idea was to take a match between two pro's, show the match, or game, whichever.........then to go back on a table with the exact same layout as the game, and shoot each and every shot exactly like the pro's did. even if it took more than one try, all the time explaining the how, why, what, and so on and so forth.

also this idea has also been done with the archer vs reyes by cappelle and with rempe's how to run a 100 balls.

although it would be a great idea to make a series out of this, not just stop with one person/match.

thanks

Hey your stealing an idea of mine !!! LOL

This is something that I have thought about for quite some time only i see it
with a bit of a twist. I think it should be less about pool instruction and
more about the pool player. In between racks questions could be asked and
the players could tell their stories and how they got into pool and so forth.

I would still do each rack just like you are saying with them saying the how's
and why's.

I think it would open players up to the fans and create a little more fan
appreciation. The problem now is most fans dont know anything about
the players. IMO the Olympics make stars from lower tier sports by
giving them BIOS and creating storylines. Its for TV but we all have a favorite or two because we saw the story during the event.

I would like to see the show on cable in either 30 min or 60 minute shows.
One per week with replays. Each "season" could then be sold on DVD for
people that would like to have them all. Mix the participants up with
male, female, young, old and also maybe throw in a celebrity guest or an amateur guest regularly or every now and then.

I know that I would watch all the shows.

I like the show idea, but not my format. I don't think anyone would watch my idea on TV. Its more for a Accu-Stats audience. I like the idea of interviews and life stories between racks, but i would maybe do a 15 minute thing at the beginning or end. I don't want any break in instruction. This has nothing to do with setting up a table like them and running it. It is more to do with learning different players strategies and thought process. I also think that Earl Strickland would have a great video, he needs an audience to show off his bad side. On his own i think 'The Pearl' would be great in a video. I just gotta find a couple pro's that would Experiment for free on this. I can't afford to pay anyone, i would offer a profit sharing type thing. I would have to research my cost, but i think a $2-$5 dollar a DVD profit for the pro would be alright, that's IF i can make em sell.

Your post actaully got me thinking about it again. I happen to know a few people in the production end of Hollywood. The behind the scenes guys.
I will ask them for suggestions because I think if done it would be successful
and would need to be done correctly. I have bought and watched many
instructional tapes and almost all of them just did not have the production
needed. Great information in the videos however. My guess is that many people just did not have the $$$$ to allocate to production.
My thought (or question) has always been Is the buying audience in Pool
large enough to see profitable returns? We, a a sport, even have trouble getting local support to Pro events. Would enough people buy the DVDs or
would a black market kill the small target group?
This is why I would market this towards a cable network that has more $$$$
and already has an audience and a known outlet. Maybe make a couple
experiement ones(pilots) and then try to sell the idea(show) to a network.
If not, one could surely expect positive returns although maybe marginal in size just selling to the pool specific target group.

BTW- The host of the show or DVDs would be very very important. I am not sure if it should even be a pool related person or not. Many shows live and die by the hosts. The position would be key in selling the videos as well.
Sometimes players have a hard time expressing what they are doing or forget that they are speaking with the general pool population. A host that could bridge that gap would be great.

BTW 2- where are you located?

I'm in Salmon Arm, BC. Other people call it, The Boonies, or the Middle of NOWHERE. hehe. As far as being the type of person that can relate to a TV Audience, i would love to do it, but know my limits. You gotta have someone in TV or an Actor play that role.

Man that looks like a small place. Is there a pool room there or where do you play?

Buddy Hall has a tape on 9 Ball where he describes what he is going to do and where he is going to hit the cue ball. He then says "and this is how we do it" and of course nails every shot. What a gorgeous stroke.

Sounds like a must-have. I think Buddy played the patterns as well as anybody that ever played nineball. How do I get my hands on this tape?

I have that tape. He does make everything but he does get out of line a few times and admits it :)

At a friends house just the other week I watched an accu-stats tape of Buddy Hall and Speedy Stevie D. commenting on and reviewing there own one-pocket match.

Salmon Arm is a great little place, on a very large Lake Sushwap (sp?). They are the house boat capitol of Canada from what I've seen. If anyone is interested in a great holiday, a week on a house boat out of Salmon Arm with 6 or 8 friends is one to consider.
