12 inch pro taper?

I bought a new bob frey sneaky pete last week. I love the way the cue hits, but the taper on the shaft is a little short for my liking. I have a jensen cue I love the way it hits too, but I really like the taper on the shaft of my jensen cue. Mike Johnson told me it was a 12 in pro taper. I was curious if I could get the shaft of my frey sneaky retaper like the one on my jensen cue? If so should I tell them I want a 12 inch pro taper on it or just bring my jensen shaft and let the cue repair guy see for himself how I want the frey shaft tapered?

Thanks Bryan

You need to bring the shaft and let the mechanic copy the taper. Pro Taper is a generalized term. Most people think that with a 12" Pro Taper the shaft is straight for 12 inches but this is not neccessarily true. When a shaft has perfectly straight section then that section will be very whippy. Since most Americans use a closed bridge they don't like the feel of a shaft where the taper grows to quickly as it hinders the shaft sliding thru their fingers. This is the reason there are so many different tapers out there. Every cue-maker is trying to come up with a taper that is slightly increasing in size so as not to be so whippy but doing it in such a way that it feels like a straight taper while sliding thru the closed bridge.

This is the reason that most 10 mm Snooker shafts with a European taper are actually stiffer than a 13 mm pro tapered shaft.

Tap - Tap - Tap - Very Good explanation Dick :)

Take the other shaft with you, so it can be used as a guide (pattern).
A few quick checks with a caliper will tell the person doing the retaper exactly what he needs to know.

How much would this cost roughly? Any cuemakers in here wanna do this for me? Ill send the jensen shaft with it to copy it

Thanks bryan

Talk to Mike

I would talk to mike and just have him make you another shaft (if he will - dont know for sure). I have my lathe set up to the taper I like and wont change it - its a pain in the butt.

I normally charge 20.00 for walk ins. Shipping and Ins. would have to be added if it is sent. It would be a one day turn around
