Comfort and feel aside, what are the pros and cons of playing with a 13mm vs smaller size tips.? Said another way, why should I purchase a shaft with the smaller diameter? Thanks for your opinions.

Some people advocate getting smaller diameter LD shafts for beginners...others say that you should have a certain ability level before trying to 'adjust' to these kinds of shafts. BTW, you can have smaller shafts that are NOT LD shafts too. Bottom line is that you should try playing with some, and make up your own mind.

I played with a 13mm for years as it seemed to be the standard size tip for new cues. However I found when I got to an 11.75 that I had more action on the cue ball. Actually it just seemed like you had more options on the cue because the 11.75 seemed to be more of a precise hit.

I guess that is why some say play with a 13 and get good and then move to a smaller size?

However, if you learned to play with a 11.75 LD shaft then you wouldn't have to make that adjustment when you got better now would you?

I think like Scott says it is just all preference. Find out what works for you and what feels good to you. Honestly this can and will change over time. Many years down the road what you started with will be something different that what you choose to play with when you get better.

RBLilly...It's important to note that the size of the contact patch is the same, regardless of tip size, shape, hardness, or how hard (or soft) you strike the CB...1/8" or 3mm.

it is also important to know that 13mm gives more room for error. I would advise 13mm cues for most beginners. Simply because while the contact patch is the same, there is a bigger area in which the contact may occur.

Just my 2 cents. Scott is the Instructor so I may be out of line here.

A smaller shaft may fit your bridge better?
